Buying a Labrador these days

So PH reflects real life: people ask for advice and then completely ignore it.
Welcome to my world!!! I’ve spent years studying/ getting accredited/maintaining my CPD and teaching a variety of breeds and owners.
I’m not suggesting I’m *always* right but I’m certain my advice will “Do No Harm” (the fundamental ethos of a positive trainer)..... I’m also sure any advice I give is backed up by Science and not a now debunked ‘pack leader’ or wolf based myth.
However people will say yeah yeah then watch awful TV shows or go to a local dog groomer for their training...... inevitably they will return later with worse problems
From the shooting press:
How to prevent your gundogs from being stolen

"research by the Pets4Homes website showing that the average price being asked for a puppy between March to September was £1,883, a rise of around £1000 when compared to the same period in 2019. For some popular breeds, such as labradors and cocker spaniels - coincidentally the most popular breeds with the shooting community, according to the 2020 Game Shooting Census - the asking price could have been as high as £3,000. Cheers for the positivity, we're away with the kids this Sunday so not picking her up until we get back-then it'll be the hard work beginning! Parents are all fine working stock so I'm anticipating she should be good to train but with three other girls in the house (of the human breed) I'm expecting a battle on my hands for any tough love!
What sold me on her was the circumstances of her litter. They first bred the mother last year so their sons could get a pup each, the stud was another working lab from one of the large shoots on one of our local fells. The litter, and their two sons dogs were so good they decided to repeat the litter again this year as the father was approaching retirement and the mother was getting on.
They had the pick of the litter, the stud took another as fee and that left two-a dog and a bh.
When I rang up on Sunday, out of the blue as someone else shared a litter on Social Media that linked to a pets4home listing I knew immediately that it was the type of stock for me.
Dropped the remainder of the money off yesterday and found out one of the other members of the shoot had come round about half an hour after us to take her only to leave disappointed.
9 weeks old so quite old for the usual advert but so much easier seeing a fully formed puppy.
Thanks to the invite to the other thread, I'll see how it goes. I find it a little...I'll be polite and say it's a little more "pet enthusiast" than I'm used to
Congratulations, what an absolute beauty
I've got a WCS - just turned 3 this month and cost us about £500. He's been a godsend through lockdown for us all and I am permanently home based now so no issue with the long term here - he's my best mate
Would love to get him a buddy to play with but the prices are just ridiculous. I think the wait until the inevitable return to the office glut of rehomes is the way to go for us

Not a labrador but I just got a 17 week old puppy from The Dogs Trust. He's mustard and is coming along nicely. I've had him 4 weeks. He'd be worth thousands of pounds on Gumtree or a place where rogues sell pups. I paid £185. I can't believe my good fortune.
Rescue places sometimes have some amazing animals, available at very short notice.

OP, whilst unsavoury to talk money on PH, , did you pay pre-covid prices?
Certainly not what some of these daftys are paying/asking.More than my last who was descended from field champions going back to the early 20th century but then this one has similar and it’s 13 years later.
Allowing for inflation it’s about the same give or take.
Lost our dog 5 years back and looking for another, the last 2 labs we had were rescues and I have never had a puppy but we have a huge garden and live in the country plus the wife and I are home for the foreseeable future. We have been holding off to be honest due to mad pricing but dont want to wait too much more
Been checking the re-homing centres and not seeing dogs being handed over as expected when people start going back
So I'm checking the sites mentioned in the thread like https://www.champdogs.co.uk , https://labrador-lifeline.com
Any other places to try - We are based in Berkshire but dont mind travelling 1 hour away or so ?
Well things moved on very quickly
We used the Champdogs site and found one litter that shared my birthday which seemed serendipitous but on further investigation the hip score of mum was 7/24 and we had concerns, especially so as when i asked the breeder about it she seemed really aggressive like I was challenging her integrity so we decided against that one
There was another litter on there only a few miles away so we checked them out last week and to cut a long story short bought one. Mum and dad both have good hip and elbow scores Dad 6 and Mum 7, both pedigree gundogs. Nice people and obsessed with dogs and heavily involved in gundog groups in the area
Only 5 weeks old so 3 weeks until he comes home but being so close they are happy for visits for him to get used to us
I found the champdogs site very useful so would recommend it but you still need to do your diligence it seems
