Bumped into this little guy on a recent survey in North England - not up on my bats and usually leave them to the specialists , can anyone ID him/her?

..was thinking Horseshoe?

Edit function currently unavailable - just to mention, much bigger than a Pipistrelle

Looks like a horseshoe bat to me too (prob a lesser horseshoe cos of the ears) - but they all look a bit the same to be me (I’m a bat racist it’s true)

Also I’m fairly sure that is a pile of more than one bat!

Those were my thoughts too but definately only one bat - but a big bugger! I stood and watched him for a few minutes and am certain he was not huddled with another, assuming bats do that sort of thing - it was -2.5 however so he may have been cold and 'fluffed up' so to speak

I've done some research and think it's a Daubenton's Bat

Ah interesting - after your update I was fairly sure it was a greater pie-eater cos that is a damn tubby bat. Maybe it’s the pic but it looks like you can see the horseshoe face shape? Easy to see what you expect to in a pic tho I guess! I also still think I can see an extra wing on the left but I’m sure you’re right and it’s one if you watched it!

Could be a Serotine bat, the body colour and ear size look about right. I also thought it looked like two bats as it looks like two wings on the left of the photo.

Think you can get apps that identify bats from their squeaks?

Bit off topic, but I put my Bat box up on the house yesterday.

Really hoping I can attract a few, i know there’s normally quite a few in my area.

..I've had feed back from a registered bat handler/surveyor I use who I sent the pic to.

He says probably Myotis, so could be Daubenton's or another of that genus, but adds that it's not possible to do a positive ID without handling which could not be done anyway during the roosting season.
