Complete kit. He has a custom saddle that’s been fitted for his shape. The biggest challenge with the is one being a thoroughbred will be keeping weight ON him as well as the usual quirks for this breed.

He is rapid though, ex racer but wasn’t quick enough to place high enough so retired young. It’s amazing how much info you can find when they are properly documented and maintained.

That good news on the saddle.
We have a Thoroughbred and he keeps weight on fairly well but goes out 12 hours a day in winter and 24 in summer. The spring grass is the killer when he gorges on it

As we go into winter I’m hoping the grass starts to slow down. The current horse is like a barrel and a whisker away from laminitis so we are managing that closely.

Thoroughbreds can be a lot hardier than people give them credit for! I have had a couple over the years - one of which an ex racer and both were good doers. I've currently got a thoroughbred x arab and he is also a fairly good doer!

Just found this thread....

We have two money pits in our household. My daughter rides a lot.

Her current horse is "Chip", a 7 year old ex race horse from Ireland. Fantastic horse, so calm and capable.

Currently competing at 1m level ODE.

Eats an incredible amount of food and never puts weight on (lucky guy).

Before Chip we had ponies (and still got her first one) who lived out 24/7 and we never had a stable, just field shelters. With the horse upgrade, there was a request for a facilities upgrade which was duly complied with of course...

Built during lockdown (thank goodness for FB marketplace scouring the area for timber and bits). Did it all myself, including the base - total cost just under £4k for a stable, hard standing and tack room. And even better it is still all in tact 18 months later!

He lives out mostly, only coming in for feeds.

I’m getting serious land envy here and that horse (and rider) looks amazing.

Update from us… we are now a two horse family. I collected a 15.3 thoroughbred at the weekend and so far he’s awesome. Has some vices being an ex racer (cribbing) and has never jumped before.

Daughter has big plans to get him jumping and out to some
Competitions next spring.

Our ex-race horse is a wind sucker (only way we could afford him!). They do sadly often have vices from being stabled so much. Gret to give them another chance at being proper animals!

Fantastic updates, looking forward to seeing more on the yard progress.

@Dave, one of ours cribs but not really a bad thing, as you say more boredom from over stabling before we got him. He certainly leads a busy life now.

The daughter continues to progress well, and won the Arena Event at recent district day.

Brilliant. Good to hear progress. Our new guy is coming on well although the water thing was a step too far. Hard no on this but he got over it eventually. I think we have underestimated how easy it will be to get him jumping so we have a plan to stick to over the winter.

Cribbing seems to have stopped for now. Weather here has been insane so we learned thoroughbreds can get swollen legs if over stabled. Nothing a short walk doesn’t solve but need to monitor it.

@Dave - give Ron Brady a look, he's a fantastic SJ coach, worth the travel. You'll find him via Ron Brady Sport Horses on FB

Thanks mate. I’ll have a look at that.

Teeth today for the big guy. He was out of his mind with sedation

The wind sucking and cribbing has stopped thankfully.

After about five months, we are finished, well we are moving our horses in next week so that pretty much counts as finished.

Finally got the water connected after the water company spent three months with various visits digging up the road/verge trying to find their pipe. In the end they found it over the other side of the road…

Automatic drinkers in the fields, winter turnouts and stables. Best of all, having the winter turnouts means we can go from turnout to stable to arena without having to touch mud! This will be a luxury compared to where we have been previously.

Solar system installed giving us all the lighting (arena, stables etc) and power plus powering CCTV and alarm system. We are lucky in that the barn faces directly south so should work well. Kitchen are to get out of the weather and make a hot drink.

Had to have the fields harrowed and seeded to improve the grass, which has started to come thorugh and the pond has started to fill so will give us some waterplay once its deep enough to fill the crossing. Exciting times.

Bravo mate. Looks stunning.

We have also brought both of ours in now as the temp drops and mud increases. This thoroughbred is a bit special…
