demanding to be on the other side of a shut door, rinse and repeat is standard cat behaviour

Aye, I wouldn't worry about dementia. Our lads do this and they're essentially teenagers. We gave up shutting most doors properly as you never get peace, can't even take a st without one of them yowling at the door laugh

I would say it's only been noticeable vaguely recently, but the more I think about it I realise that WFH I was usually just working from the sofa, and it's only been a few months since I actually set this office room up and now use this, so I guess he's just being a cat and wanting to follow me around.

My guess is attention-seeking.

Personally, I think they just find being denied access to any part of the house a personal affront. Humans are here to serve, after all!

When our elderly cat started yowling it was because she was losing her eyesight….

I would move house but don't tell Steve, leave him to the new owners.
By the way Steve is an excellent cat name. What is the girl cat called?
We have 5 cats, they are all a pain in the arse, just in different ways, one of them now decides to jump on the bed and yowl loudly to announce its presence, this is ALWAYS just after I've nodded off or at 6 in the morning when I'm fast asleep.
One of the others took over a year to figure out how to use the cat flap, she just thought the other cats disappeared or appeared by magic from the bottom of the wall, she just sat there yowling until let out/let back in, She's thick.
One of the other cats, actually one of the less irritating ones, left dirty water marks absolutely everywhere downstairs the other day, obviously fell in a puddle and then decided to come indoors and spread it all around, very nice. p.s. I noticed this just before leaving to play tennis, I carefully avoided stepping in it and left it for Mrs Enut to clean up when she got in, 'must have happened after I left' was my response when she sent me a video of the mess!

Our cat is 17 and suspect he has finally lost his marbles. Similar story to yours - he yowls to be fed and shortly after being fed, yowls again, almost like he's forgotton that he's just been fed.

Mine is seven-ish and she has done this for years. It’s just a cat being a dick. biggrin

I would get cat checked out for diabetes my 17 year old cat was constantly eating but not lossing weight he was getting grumpy struggled to jump etc belly was enlarged. Turned out he had diabetes and is pretty common in cat as they age.

Ours is deaf as a post now and the yowling has reached biblical proportions. it's just life with an elderly cat. Like humans, they get ruder and less patient as they get older (and funnier!!).

That doesn't make sense...

But another thing that old cats can suffer from is hyperthyroidism - symptoms being losing weight and being sick. Easily managed with the right medication from a vet though.
