When do you call time?

I've just found out that Montgomery (Monty) my bearded collie has tumours on his spleen and liver
He seems fine in himself at the moment, but I realise that the terrible decision has to be made sooner rather than later...
As has already been mentioned, the cartoon posted above gets us all in the feels department...
This is the 4th time in my 50 years to date that I know I need to be the responsible owner, but boy it doesn't get any easier does it?
Sorry apart from my partner I have not talked (typed) to anyone else yet...
Is it unreasonable to think about taking some emergency leave from work?
I fear I may be a real mess afterwards (again).
Condolences to everyone on this thread that have already had to take the bravest decision.

It certainly doesn’t get easier, as you say.
Enjoy the time you have together
Good luck

Really sorry to hear about Monty. I've lost two dogs to Hemangiosarcoma and several others to various causes and, as you say, it doesn't get any easier, no matter how many times you go through it.He seems fine in himself at the moment, but I realise that the terrible decision has to be made sooner rather than later...

In terms of taking time off work, you should do what you think is necessary. I've been pretty lucky with my employers being understanding.
There are many of us on here who have been through what you are experiencing, so please post whenever you need to.
Sending my best to you and Monty.
Tough thread got a poorly dog at the moment and was doing okay. That cartoon set me off and cried for the first time in 20 years. (not upset it was posted though) probably needed it tbh.
Got everything crossed for little Bill, stable at the moment but still critical.
Condolences to others in the thread and those on nearing the end hope you enjoy your time together.

A week on and now a little less raw thought i'd come back to the topic.
This topic really helped (even that bloody cartoon with still gets dust in my eyes) the 3 Ws that Oddman said very early on.. when I started he was ticking all 3, then sometimes it became 2 and sometimes 1 but on the whole 3 so kept going, when it was rarely 3 we started to have serious discussions between us and with the Vet.. then it was never 3 so we knew we had a couple of days and could do everything in a planned and controlled manner.
Work were really good, (helps I report to the Owners one of whom I share an office with, who was nearly as upset about it as me as thrioughout Covid he came to work every day with me and she often dog sat for me with her children) so when on Friday lunchtime I was updating her she just said "Go, seeya whenever" I appreciate not all employers might be as flexible (I may not have been in previous roles must to my regret).
We booked the Vet for the final session for 18:00 on the Friday night, I have to say they were lovely.... when we arrived they all knew why we where there but they behaved as they did everytime they saw him as though it were just another check up, they took their time, they gave us time, no rush really gentle.. they had an endless supply of Tissues and let two people in their mid 50s sob............... tehy got his bed from the car for us, made him comfortable, tucked him in with a blanket and then we took him to the pet crematorium that we'd pre-booked.
One final thought was that even though we were reviewing the 3Ws we perhaps didn't realise how he was feeling, I took him for a lovely walk to one of his favourite places after Christmas and the 2 mile circuit took 90minutes, ....... yesterday I did the same walk with our other dog in 25minutes... now he was a scent hound so walks never were quick and I usually planned 45minutes for the walk with him.. but perhaps with hindsight it was tougher than I appreciated.
So yes we miss the little bugger.... those unplanned baths because he found a lovely pile of fox ste, the tag teaming with our other dog so they both get fed, walked, given treats, pampered or generally spoilt..... but we're getting over it and already we're discussing "succession planning" we've had 3 rescues so this time may go for a breed and starting to contact breeders to see what's coming in the 12/24months timeframe, Mrs B used to work and show dogs and feels she may get back into it.

Good morning Marcellus
Thanks so much for comng back to the thread.
Time moves on and we learn to live with the pain of loss.
The first of our dogs that we had to put down was the wonderful Bramble, a flat coated retriever not yet eight years old. We were bot devastated and almost inconsolable. Now we look back at him with love in our herts as he was such a clown
Your hearts will tell you what is the right thing to do in the future.

Well that escalated quickly.
The decision had to be made this afternoon.
Bye bye Monty, I’m going to miss you buddy.
Thoughts going out to all of you going through the same sad times.

A lot of sad news on here recently; I feel for everyone going through this. Take care.
Sadly looks increasingly like I'll be joining a few others on the thread and having to say my goodbyes. Got a drive to Yorkshire in the morning by which time latest blood test will be in. I've got my fingers crossed for something but the vets are more gloomy now so have to be realistic. Going to be a long 5hour drive
Bill fighting best he can. Went to see him today and he's waggy and eating treats. He's exhausted but was pleased to see us. His condition is stable at the moment but need next few days to see if his body starts producing red blood cells.. He's improved in himself though which is great and walking short distances.
Find out tomorrow if he has leukaemia which is what set off the autoimmune attack. Got everything crossed at the moment.

He's home. He's happy as Larry although gets shattered quickly. Back food in a big way. Not sure what what long term relapse is a high possibility but now we enjoy our time together hopefully plenty of adventures. Hope his hair grows back quickly his legs look like a fancy poodles with all the trimmings. Seems his brother isn't to happy with him so some bonded needed. Hopefully that won't take to long.
Cheers for the well wishes all.
