Lexi is a small JRT X Cairn with the combined breed's prey instinct, and actively seeks out rats. When she goes through bushes and rat locations she often come bach with a pet flea or two. Till recently we've used Beaphar shampoo with the occasional spot on treatment ( usually summer as I try to avoid chemical stuff on her coat for long periods) .
For some time Beeaphar has not been available as pet stores tell me that it kills fleas and ticks present at bath time, but has no long term effect and so makers have gone back to the drawing board.
Any vetty folk suggestions of such a flea shampoo that is not of excessive cost.

Sorry as it doesn't answer your question directly but the only thing we've found that eradicates the litte buggers, and keeps them away, is a Seresto flea collar.

Various shampoos and spot on just didn't work

Fit and forget - our two terriers have suffered zero ill effects.

Flea shampoos are a waste of time.

Anything POM (ie directly from the vet or with a written prescription) works. A Seresto collar or Advantage are the only products available in the UK without a prescription that work.

Only 5% of the fleas are on the animal, you need to treat the other 95%, in the home. Indorex Defence is the choice, available from any online pet pharmacy or Amazon (v. poisonous to birds, reptiles and fish).

The above are my opinions based on anecdotal evidence of being a vet for a fair few years.
