Both of my neighbour's cats came round last night. I think my porch was the coldest place they could find. Or maybe they just wanted away from the screaming kids playing in the street.

Anyway, a little after this they both fell asleep, holding hands.

('scuse the mess).

2 rescue cats. I collected them last night and dropped them off at the airport 6.45am so they're off to new homes in Germany. I'm just not a cat fan at all but these 2 seemed cute enough, as far as disloyal horrid fleabags go smile

I've heard of discovering new export markets but this takes the (cat) biscuit!

The majority of rescue animals rehomed here either end up UK, Germany or Holland. Or with citizens of one of those 3 who live here in Portugal.

Sadly my cat Charlie died last Thursday evening, he was only five.

I am not sure what happened to him, he either fell off the roof, or was run over, there were not really any marks on him. I found him dead on the drive.

He was a great cat, and will be sadly missed.

His sister doesn't seem to be coping too well.

She has always lived with other cats, and seems to be lost without him.

I am not sure if she would be happier with another male younger cat living with her, or living on her own? She does not get on well with the neighbours cats, and always treated Charlie as her own offspring, letting him eat first, and letting him get fuss, as a priority etc.

Any advice would be welcome.

Sorry to hear of your loss. Always a wrench. We've had a number of pairs with varying success. When we first moved in together we combined households, one cat from each. Kamba and Mignon pretty much ignored each other. When my cat (Mignon) died we got a kitten, Aurum. Kamaba pretty much ignored Aurum despite the Aurum wanting to play all the time. By the time Aurum was 5 Kamba had died of natural causes. Got new kitten, Nimbus. Played together like long lost siblings for 6 weeks, then Aurum suddenly took a dislike to Nimbus (no idea why) and beat the crap out of her at every opportunity. About a year later Aurum got run over and we got another new kitten, Nova. Nova is now 3 and she is best mates with Nimbus who is 5. So I guess there is no guarantee any pairing will work out as you plan, but when you do find a pair that get along it is very rewarding.

Thanks for that CR6ZZ.

It is obviously a bit of a gamble if she would get on with another cat.

I think I will wait a bit longer to see how she gets on living alone.

At the moment she does not seem to be interested in doing anything, as she always used to copy what he did.

There's no doubt that cats are at a degree of risk if they go out on their own, the risk will vary from cat to cat and from one location to another. At the moment we live in a cat-safe environment and can let ours out in relative safety. But in the past, especially when we lived near a road, we built an outdoor run for them, something like a conservatory but with wire netting instead of glass. The cats loved it, spent hours in it, and didn't get attacked by other cats, dogs, neighbours' children with air rifles or road traffic.

Sorry to hear about Charlie. Also makes me worried as ours spends most of his day adventuring, although we live at the bottom of a cul de sac next to some wasteground so it's not as bad as some places.

Here's Alfie demonstrating that he has a firm anti-recycling policy...

Sorry to hear about Charlie frown

As alan was abandoned & rescued from a life in the outside world, I try and satisfy myself with the thought that he's having a great life compared to his old one.

And the constantly fear the worst as soon as I have not seen him for 10 minutes.

That is sad

I have become quite protective of mine though it seems I dont need to worry too much as he has pretty much become top cat in the neighbourhood.

He doesnt seem to go too far either. Im not sure if its the breed or the fact he is neutered but he really only goes into my garden and the adjoining ones plus occassionally into the car park that adjoins my garden. He does steal food apparently from a cat a couple of doors along too.

Sorry to hear about Charlie.

We lost one in April last year to cancer and then one, as mentioned in this thread, in June. The remaining one seemed to sulk for a while and spends a lot of time outdoors but seems back to his old self now.

Not sure he'd get on with another one at his age.

frown Sorry for your loss

I'd get another from a rescue place, organise a safe room and introduce the 2 of them gradually.

Let her curiosity & loneliness overcome her dislike of other cats

Thanks for everyone's messages.

Charlie's sister Holly has perked up a bit over the last 24 hours.

I will have to see if she improves
