anyone here with a pet rat?
Discussion
Ivy isn’t doing too well .
Doesn’t want to move around the cage, she is normally the first out the cage especially when there is food involved!
She’s currently asleep in my hoody on my chest. She’s never sat still for long enough let alone fallen asleep!
She’s not eating other than a couple of treats. Eyes are squinty (can be a sign of pain I’m rats) and she’s struggling to breath today.
Vets are booked for this afternoon. But I’ll be surprised if she comes back. She’s one of the original two we got .

She was put to sleep about an hour ago. Between the call to the vets and turning up her mouth had swollen on one side.
Could be an abscess or tumour. Sadly it was a tumour.
She was already going to be knocked out so the vet could check to see what it was. She said due to her age and the location the best thing is not to wake her back up.
It’s strange…the stuff I’ve seen at work hasn’t bothered me in the slightest. This has hit me like a train.
Bloody pets eh! Certainly take your heart don’t they!

Daisy went back to the vets and it was decided she needed to be spayed for health reasons. Vet is hoping it will help with the lumps and her aggression to her cage friends. That was last Thursday and she’s doing alright. She’s in a hamster cage with Holly to keep her company and is doing really well.
Hopefully after Xmas we’ll get her back in the normal cage.

Daisy has recovered from her op well. One of the lumps has got smaller. But one has stayed the same. Might need another trip just to get it checked.
We have another rat to join the group.
Bubbles. She is about two so won’t have too long with us, but her sister Squeak died last week and her owner didn’t want her to be alone for too long.
All five of them are currently cuddled up in the travel cage. Things are going well!

Some good news! Last year we got put on a waiting list for a few local breeders who have a good reputation of breeding good rats, both health wise put also personality wise.
We collect these two next week. Two girls who are about eight weeks old.
I wasn't sure about getting some more as this will take us up to seven, however Holly is two and a half now so her time is limited. Armistice is around the same age and Bubble is also around that age. Plus once I saw the photos I fell in love!
We need some names though.

Picked them up today. The difference between them and our pet shop ones are night and day. I wont be getting them from a pet shop again. They are so friendly and happy to be held. Even Holly who we've had for two years now doesn't like being held. They cost us £40 for both where as the pets at home ones cost £12.50 each, but if they are healthier and a better temperament then its worth it!
Still haven't got any names for them though.

The two new ones have names. Dark coloured is Olive and light coloured is Opel. They are getting on great with the others.
Daisy is on another load of antibiotics due to the abscess coming back.
Had a bit of a scare with Clem. She had a choking session. Girlfriend took her to work to keep an eye on her and an ear infection was also picked up. Two days after Daisy went to the vets.
Daisy and Clem are in a smaller cage at the moment so that the others don’t piss them off whilst they are feeling a bit rough.

Things where going well with Clem and Daisy. Both back in with the others.
Yesterday Clem was absolutely fine. First out of the cage when I opened it. Climbing all over us.
Playing with the toilet roll we added in there.
Woke up this morning and she’s at the bottom of the cage not moving and cold to touch. Found a vet that was opened and took her down. Best thing was to put her to sleep. No idea what caused the turn.
Very surprised. We thought it would be Holly next as she is two years seven months old!

I feel I’m only updating when it’s bad news!
Last week we took Holly and Daisy to the vets. Holly is getting old and struggling with moving around the cage. She’s been giving some painkillers for arthritis and appears a lot better.
Daisy however didn’t return which we didn’t expect. Her lump had grown and it had got injected.
Today at 7pm bubble was watching me eat dinner. 8pm she was at the bottom of the cage and not doing well. Emergency vets booked and seen at 8:25. She had suffered with a stroke so it was decided she should be put to sleep.
Can’t vault the vets at all. He said as well that he won’t be charging us the call-out fee which is lovely.

Another vets trip!
Armistice this time. I was sat having dinner and she ran up the cage and appeared to have a fit. Stiff as a board and fell down. She wasn’t herself.
Vet said we can leave her and see how she goes but due to her age and how she was behaving (wasn’t noticing a hand in front of her, only moving anti clockwise, dragging her feet) she was put to sleep.
We now have three. Holly who was the first (along with Ivy). She will be three in September.
Olive and Opel who are nutters.
We are in the waiting list for two/three more from the same breeder as Olive and Opel.
