My poor Jimmy has just been attacked by a Boxer, he's now off to the vets to have his ear looked at, I am off to the doctors shortly as I have a bite on my arm from the boxer, which bloody hurts, what a disastorous end to a lovely family walk (that we'd only just started out on!!)

We're good really. Small rip on Jimmys ear. Nice puncture wound on my arm should bruise well.

Off to police tom to make a report but I've not got much info to offer.

Not sure what this will do for his confidence though he was already wary of big dogs after being badly bitten couple years ago.

Quick update on Lucy. Coming along nicely now after a slight health hiccup with a joint infection in her front leg.
Growing fur by the day and becoming the most affectionate dog ever !! Still quite bald but trying to force every bit of fur out of her skin she can smile

her bald nose is apparently down to her thyroid basically shutting down before she was found, hopefully this will get better over the next 6 months or so.

Picking Salvi up in a couple of weeks. He was found by the side of the road in Spain, poisoned, unable to walk. Now getting back to health like a 1 year old Galgo should be, ready to join our 2 other greyhounds.

Well, today has been a very bad day. Harder than I ever imagined. Up to 2 weeks ago Lucy was improving, putting on weight and becoming a dog again. Then she lost her appetite, stopped eating, we tried all sorts. By last weekend she'd lost a kilo in weight, and her energy for life had dwindled. Last night was a bad night and our vet (a friend of Mrs MoJos) was on the phone giving advice until the early hours. Today, after a long examination it was decided that she was deteriorating quickly. She was put to sleep at 2pm. We had a post mortem carried out which found that her organs had failed and her small intestine was ulcerated and blocked beyond repair. All this was due to the bds that starved her almost to death before we adopted her back in April.
Sorry to bring down the happiness on this thread but a few of you have been so kind previously I thought I'd let you all know the bad news.
I was hoping my next update would be more positive however it was not to be. Lucy is now in a better place and free of her pain. RIP special dog.

I'm really sorry to hear that, she was a lovely looking dog. At least you gave her a few months of kindness.

I can't believe how some scum can treat animals. If you don't want it there are numerous charities that will take them off your hands.

Properly gutted frown. I'm so sorry she lost her battle and so unnecessary due to the cruelty she previously endured. There is little positive to take due to such a sad outcome but you must remember this, she experienced love, care and kindness in the few months you had her and please don't ever forget that. Dear sweet Lucy may you RIP

:-) Salvi has turned from a little heap of misery to a really nice young hound in the space of a few weeks. Responding well to training, food, sofa and our other animals. He is even managing to get our 10 year old greyhound to be energetic.

Following Lucy's passing to the great big Lurcher running fields in the sky, we contacted Greyhound Rescue Wales a month or so ago. 3 weeks ago we collected Jack, a 5 year old ex Irish racer.

Today was his first day on the beach with us, I think he enjoyed himself !!

Bouncing,

and lots of running around !!

Even a bit of oversteer on fast corners !!

Well Jack looks the dogs.. Love the grey spots on the legs.
Here are my 2, or rather Max (black) is the other half's while Ash (blue/white)was my birthday present last September

Reading Bex's post seems to be a similar, though thankfully less bad, incident than that which happened to me 7 weeks ago. On the Sunday morning I was taking the pack for their morning constitutional, Hadn't gone more that 50 yds from home when another greyhound that had slipped its collar as its woman owner had paused from her jogging, attacked Ash as we walked up to them. I spent what seemed like forever (probably no more than 2 minutes) trying to get the attacking beetch censored off. Ash hadn't got a single bite back on the attacker and big wuss, Max had backed off and was held by a passer-by. Although the other owner said something about exchanging addresses my only thought was to get my profusely bleeding dog to the vet's. Fortunately our vet has emergency weekend cover so covered in mud, blood and Ash's crap (what a party!!) I got her there in half an hour. She had a huge tear down to the muscle on her right rear thigh another slash in her flank, a deep tear in her neck and numerous other puncture wounds. The vet subsequently told me he thought it was touch and go if Ash would survive but he operated to clean up the wounds and debride the dead tissue in the open wounds. He stitched her neck and side (where she had a drain for a week) and stitched a pad over her open muscle wound (about the size of a pint glass mouth). I left her in the vet's care (we were able to take her home for nursing the next day). Then I went to the hospital. A bite wound on my right wrist was swelling up I had badly hit my left shoulder and had got a massive shiner. The nurse said I should report to the police so I did when I got home and guess what...they weren't interested. As it was basically a dog on dog attack they don't consider that attention worthy, as I was injured intervening that apparently was my own fault!!
Anyway 10 days after the attack one of the vet team suggested manuka honey to smear on the open wound so we tried it and it miraculously shrank the wound such that although there will be a small hairless scar, Ash is now suffering no lasting physical effects.
So the morals are:
Manuka honey is great for greyhound wounds and sores.
Don't waste your time reporting attacks on your dog to the police
If you need to beat off an attacking dog a whack on the back of the neck with shoe or walking stick will bring them up short or grabbing the attackers back legs and yanking upwards. I didn't know this until googled afterwards. Another experienced owner of greys has since told me that entire male attackers can be persuaded to desist by a 'tackle grapple'

Trophyblue what a horrendous ordeal for you all to have gone through. Jimmy is wishing Ash a smooth recovery (and I the same for you).

Jimmy had the side of his chest ripped open couple yrs ago (play gone wrong the dog wasn't attacking him this time) that took 6 weeks to heal and longer for his confidence with bouncy dogs to return. He got there in the end with patience and reassurance from up when meeting these type of dogs.

All the best

Thanks for the good wishes, Ash is settling down psychologically nicely (just growls occasionally at other dogs- no particular type and strangers coming into the house). We meet a lot of other greyhounds on our walks and I'd never heard of them attacking occurring on immediate meeting. Anyway normal sniffing duties have resumed, following the recommended Victoria Singleton methods!
