Is £10K for a holiday for 2½ people extravagant?
Discussion
My partner of two years has worn me down and I finally ageeed that she could book a holiday for late next year involving several days in a seriously luxurious "tent" in the Serengeti park followed by a few days in a top hotel overlooking the sea in Tanzania.
She is going to pay for herself and her seven year old daughter however all-in-all it's going to cost £10K which is 10 times more than I've ever paid for a holiday before.
I'm up at this hour worrying about it particularly as it could cost me several thousand pounds more in lost sales as I try to run my e-commerce business over wi-fi in the hotel reception and via a dodgy or non-existent mobile phone signal.
I'm not normmally easily talked into such things but I must be mad to have gone along with this one. I just didn't want to dissapoint.

Extravagant? Of course. Nothing wrong with that though, wants to be a bloody good holiday for that price. If a posh tent in the desert is what takes your/her fancy so be it. Not my idea of a luxury holiday, but it should certainly be something for that price. If you can afford it, and it's what at least one of you wants, it's probably going to be worth it I guess.
I must admit I looked at the title and thought initially "10k, he must be barking mad, I'd never pay that". Then totted up what the last trip to vegas cost me and it seems I'm wrong. It's not that bad really, hell you can easily drop £3k pp on flights, so it depends if you see it being worthwhile. It's just one of those milestone numbers because it's a digit longer than the rest of the holidays you normally take. GFI, you'll probably have fun.

I would say that a 10k Holiday is extravagant, yes! I just hope you enjoy it and it's worth it!
If I'm right, and the other half is paying for her and her Daughter, then you're not paying half, are you? I wouldn't think that a Holiday like that is the type to say "Kids go free!!", is it??
If you don't want to go, then don't go! If you go with any reluctance, then you really won't enjoy it at all. And if you're unhappy, that will bring the mood down with the OH, and you won't get any nookie on your fancy Holiday!! Lol.

For a decent holiday (not extraordinary) I budget £1k pp pw. So not ridiculous as long as you can afford it. If you can't afford it then yes it's a ludicrous waste of money.
not a bad rule of thumb.£10k for 2.5 people for safari and beach - that's upmarket for TZ - we paid £7k for a 7day/8night safari and 5 days in Zanzibar for 3 people / 2 rooms. Did use mid-range accomodation, but yours is still probably 2x the price.
If you want to save money, go direct to a TZ operator - will be significantly cheaper, albeit you'll lose ABTA/ATOL protection. Research carefully and ask for references and you should be OK.
That said, if you're self-employed the time you spend doing that may be lost sales for you, so might not make any difference.
All relative really 10k is allot of money to most people but not much to a few! 10K for me and my other half is all in the upper limit of what we have ever spent. Safari is expensive especially if you are staying in a private reserve.
For example we're going to SA and Mauritius for our honeymoon next year. For 4 weeks it's costing about 6.5k without spending money but includes Hotels (mostly rooms only Mauritius is HB), hire car, flights, 4 nights at £500 a night private game reserve in Kruger.
I like to travel it makes work bareable, in the time we've been together I tallied up we'd spent around 50k on holidays that would have halfed our mortgage but would have not been much of a life for IMO for those 5 years.

But the OP said that he'll be spending his 'holiday' on his laptop working. If he's not going to 'look up', he should either stay at home or go to Butlins. No point splashing out if your mind is elsewhere. If you can afford it and will enjoy it - No, it's not extravagant.
If you can't afford it and will enjoy it - Yes it is, but who cares?
If you can't afford it, won't enjoy it and are only doing it for the 2 girls - Extravagant and crazy.
We spent aboout 6K 13 (eek!) years ago on our safari/honeymoon. I loved it and thought it was worth every penny. This was many times our usual holiday spend too.

Well I can't back down as she's paid the deposit and got the little girl all excited about it. I can afford it, as long as the business keeps growing as it is, and will undoubtedly enjoy it.
I will lose some orders but the online ones I can manage remotely an hour or two in the evening. I've got a year to work out how not to lose too many telephone orders.
It's a ridiculously expensive holiday but I'll treat it as the experience of a lifetime and enjoy it as much as I can without worrying about the business too much.

If you have a year to plan then why not look to train someone who can look after this in the UK whilst you're on holiday (naturally only a limited part so they can't stuff up your business),but if you think you'll lose say £2k in sales whilst on holiday then paying someone even £1k is going to be damage limiting... Could I ask who is supplying this service to you? I know Abercrombie & Kent do some lovely packages in Africa at the moment.

No point splashing out if your mind is elsewhere.Sounds like a fantastic holiday and one you should put every effort into enjoying. There are companies that provide remote office services which act as a "virtual receptionist" and will field calls for you, but you will likely get bugger all phone reception in the middle of the Serengeti so you'll have to work around that one, albeit you have a year to work out a solution/inform your customers/build up a "cushion" so the lost business won't hurt you. TBH, it sounds like you need a holiday, so be grateful to your partner for giving you the chance to unwind and enjoy it.
If you don't want to lose telephone sales for your business, set up an answer machine that asks them to email you their enquiry instead, and set up the email to automatically reply that you're on holiday so will get back to them as soon as you return.
Don't let the work take over, you probably need the break anyway rather than stressing out over the business.
