Has anyone done the above, or a variation of it?

I will be in Dallas for the Nascar race on Sunday and was thinking about driving back to LA, partly because there appears to be quite a few interesting sites on the way back, but I'm not sure if they are worth it given the large distances involved.

Initially looking at a route covering :

Abilene
Roswell
Alamogordo/Las Cruces/White Sands
Albuquerque
Petrified Forest (AZ)
Winslow, AZ
Flagstaff (Then maybe Grand Canyon)
Las Vegas
LA

But also considering going south through El Paso and then to Tucson to see the PIMA museum.

Any experience of these places or recommendations?

You're right, that is a long drive. I did a detour while on Route 66 to Austin (via Dallas) then back to the Route. Some bits are stunning, I particularly enjoyed New Mexico. We did it in 5 days (with detour to Santa Fe and Grand Canyon), but it was a lot of driving with not much time for actually getting out and enjoying places.

I've done part of that route- Vegas/Grand Canyon/Flagstaff/Petrified Forest - it is a lot of driving but most of the roads are really good and a higher speed limit than most of the rest of the USA (think it was 80 or 90 when I was there) so you can make decent progress and it's pretty relaxing driving. Can be a long way between gas stations though.

Vegas is silly and I was happy to just spend one night there, the Grand Canyon and the national park is amazing but again you can get a good idea of it in just one day, Flagstaff is unexciting but the nearby Petrified Forest is definitely worth a visit. I'd also recommended Sedona, it's fully of hippy-types selling crystals and stuff but a nice little town with a relaxed feel and amazing scenery surrounding it.

I've been wanting to go back for a while and will do when I can afford it, like you I'd like to make it to PIMA as I didn't have time last visit, and probably drive up through Death Valley to LA. Like the other poster said, you'd need a decent amount of time to see it all and it not be all driving.

For me, the driving is just as enjoyable as the visiting stuff so I didn't mind the long distances.
