The times I've been in Venice it it was not lively at night, no real nightlife, it was a ghost town by midnight. It will be cold and probably wet on NYE, I would avoid and choose somewhere more lively.
This. I went in December many moons ago. And the place is very, very quiet at night. Fair enough it might be more lively on NYE, but it is also very expensive too. And, from memory there wasn't too many watering holes either.
It smells like an open sewer too, which I supose it effecively is!
