Nice place to stay on way to the Lake District

We're heading upto the lakes shortly and wanted to go a day early to have a longer break.

After a nice hotel or B&B to stay in after Preston heading north on the M6. Ideally like a quite area, which a bit todo for a day.

I've seen Morecambe bay, would it be good to visit?

Morecambe is a bit of a dump but The Midland Hotel is nice, its bookable via http://www.elh.co.uk/
