By the Pongwe, I assume you mean Pongwe Beach Hotel? If so, that's a real shame as when I was out there, I heard great things about it. I see the travel agent bumped you - have you tried contacting them direct to see if they have any availability?
Anyway, I'll try and be helpful.

I spent 3.5 weeks on Zanzibar last week split between Stone Town and a hotel on the beach. We stayed at the Karafuu beach resort on the east coast, near to Pongwe as the crow flies but due to a peninsula and mangroves, perhaps an hours drive. I have never stayed in a resort before and didn't know what to expect but it was great. I had been backpacing around africa for 4 months so this was a bit of luxury at the end. The staff were really helpful and there are various excursions that you can do. There was an incredible buffet every single evening with an unbelievable array of food on offer.

The other hotel that I would suggest you have a look at is http://www.next-paradise.com/
I haven't stayed there but bumped into a couple of people on the island who had. They said it was excellent.

If possible, I would thoroughly recommend 2-3 nights in Stone Town. If you think you'd like to, I can definitely recommend a couple of great hotels.

Feel free to ask away about anything Zanzibar related smile

Cheers for the response, there's a wedding at the pongwe so not much chance but to be honest it would have been busy so not that disappointed.

Currently looking at the residence as the agent has offered a good deal.

We stayed there two years ago for the second half of our Honeymoon, to be honest food aside and the beach the accomodation was worse then our safari accommodation. I wish we had spent a little more and gone somewhere with better rooms and bathrooms. The water was brackish and lukewarn in the shower which was something that I wasn't aware of before booking.

We spent 1 night in stone town above a coffee shop which was very good. Stone Town midnight market was good with lots of food.
