A few friends and I will be spending a week in Amsterdam beginning of April and are curious about the places to stay. There are many hostels, a few famous ones (Bobs Hostel, The Flying Pig etc) with mixed reviews, a few house boats you can rent which is appealing. So just wondering if anyone knows of anywhere they'd recommend staying?

Not going to sample the 'green tea' all week long so don't want to spend the week in a giant hotbox full of space heads!

Avioding a hostel that isnt hot boxed will be extremely hard IMO, i have only been twice but first time stayed in a hostel which seemed like it was a competition who could stink out the place the most, 2nd visit it wasnt nearly as bad but still got the odd waft when passing doors.

this is the hotel i stayed at for my 2nd visit (21st birthday) and it was great for a place to crash that wasnt smack bang in the heart of it but still walking distance. the rooms and bathroom were suprisingly nice and big, breakfast was limited though but given the price it was what i expected

If you're going for a week and there's a few of you rent an apt/boat.

Did this a few years back and to rent an apt which slept 15 it worked out cheaper than getting a hotel.

And yeah, most hostels despite having "No Hasj" signs everywhere will stink.

I've just come back from a long weekend there with some mates, we went there for New Years, but because we tried booking it last minute, hostels were asking from £70-£80 a night! (probably because of the time of year).
So we ended up staying at the NH Barbizon Palace (5*) for just over £90 a night. Very nice rooms, brilliant location (across the road from central station, 1 minute walk from dam square) I know it's a lot for a week but if hostels are still asking for £80 per night, for a little over that you can get a very nice hotel.
It may be worth checking out, if thats still the case price-wise with the hostels.
If not, last time I went to Dam we stayed at the 'Rembrandt Square Hotel' (hostel). That was very nice for a hostel, only about £45 for the night, good location in Rembrandt Square, would definitely recommend if it's not all booked up.

It does seem to be the general concensus that if we stay in a hostel we will be hotboxed to within an inch of our lives! In true student fashion we are trying to keep to a budget, I'd say about 30euro a night. We are aware this is quite low and not to expect wonders from our accomodation but we just want to see if its possible to not stay in a gas chamber on the budget. Cheers for the info guys.
