Looking for recommendations or sources for large lightweight suitcases. Would like wheeled versions, large enough for a 2 week holiday. Don't need the utmost in durability as they will only be used once a year (if that), but would like something that won't leave my pants strewn across the conveyor belt.

I have been looking on Amazon and Ebay etc and not really sure what I should be going for.

Go with a 4 wheeled case and move it in the upright position instead of angled and the only weight issue you will have is the airplane limit. I have Samsonites which have been abused in airports around the world for several years and they still look good. Also, check to see if the airline allows 2 bags and take two. Don't stuff everything into one bag only to be over the weight limit when you could carry twice as much if you had 2 bags. Again, if you have the four wheeled type it's no issue having two bags instead of struggling with one crap one.

get one with good wheels. No good going light/cheap if they break off after 1 trip or are a nightmare to pull along.

If you buy cheap, you buy twice is my motto.

My Nan told me the same before we went on holiday last year and she bagged us two of them.

They are called Sub-Zero and actually are brilliant quality and do weigh nothing. They also have a long guarantee (10 years i think).

Have a look here:
http://www.directluggage.co.uk/brands/sub-0-g-gene...

They are much, much cheaper in Matalan and actually have some plain black ones over the garish ones on offer above.

Ours got thrown about and over packed and never failed. In fact we saw the guys in Montego Bay airport handling the luggage and if they can take the abuse they gave them they will survive anything.

When our aged Samsonite died a death I purchased one of these Tripps to go to the States with. Although it feels flimsier than the Samsonite it is also considerably lighter, but so far has managed 4 holidays unscathed. I would deffo buy another. They also have TSA locks if you are travelling to the States and don't fancy Customs busting the lock on your case smile

FYI I actually bought mine from Debehams...couple of quid more but you can have a look at them and walk out the door with one.

I appreciate that the OP doesn't give an indication of budget but Tumi and Rimowa are a tad pricey for occasional holiday luggage.

Thanks for the replies. I didn't give a budget as I was after as many recommendations as possible. No point saying £100 then find that there would have been an ideal option that cost £125, but someone didn't share it.

I will have a look in Matalan (local TK Maxx isn't great) as I would rather have a good look at what I am buying rather than buying based on an online picture.

The airline we are using for the next holiday charges to carry a second bag so would rather just have one stuffed to the limit.

Not sure what that means, unless you mean it's a particularly small branch with a limited range.

None have any frills; they just sell quality goods from previous seasons. I mentioned them because I noticed a lot of their luggage marked 'lightweight' last weekend and was comparing them with the regular stuff.

If you think TK looks like a charity shop, you just need to look past that: Matalan sells cheap goods cheaply; TKM sells expensive goods cheaply.

We bought a huge samsonite case when our old one broke on holiday over Christmas. Cosmolite. Its about 4 Kg, and fits over 120 litres. Stupidly big, if you ask me. Very, very tough. Something like £300-£400 I think?

And you obviously don't appreciate that this is Pistonheads and will always have people willie waving about the best brands. Wait a while and someone will come on and recommend Louis Vuitton expedition cases or hand crafted Cartier luggage. :-)

As you say, the OP gave no indication of budget.

I merely quoted a couple of brands which have served me well over the years.

Buy cheap, buy twice. smile

I presume you have asked the servants how the luggage handled, it would be ever so vulgar to porter one's own bags.

In the days when I had servants, it would not have mattered.

However, transporting one's own luggage necessitates the lightest of materials being used in their construction.

Load of cobblers, i paid £28 for my Debenhams case 9 years ago, the same time my brother bought a Samsonite case. Both have done similar trips across the Atlantic, he is replacing his for his next trip as in his words "its starting to go" mine however still looks like the day i bought it. I'm only wanting a new one as its too big now the weight limits are lower that when i bought it. If i fill it then its over weight

Don't know what Tumi or Rimowa go for, but as the saying goes, "if you have to ask..." smile

Thanks again for the advice, will update when I find something suitable should anyone else be looking for similar.
