I always avoid any case with a zip as they can be easily opened with a pen

thats if the zip hasn't broken already.

I have a battered Carlton with clasps (has "Made in England" inside). But to get the same again, it adds weight as they all seem to be on card cases. Did not want a zip but there we are, weight is the issue for me on this one.

If someone really wants to go into your suitcase they are going to manage it regardless of whatever method of closure it has.

I agree, but it's nice to know if it's been entered, things stolen or drugs planted etc.

I travel 2-300,000 miles a year through most of South East Asia and South America - it really isn't a concern.

No-one gets drugs planted on their baggage. (Apart from isolated cases which bizarrely involve legitimate security forces, which you couldn't do anything about as they have the keys for TSA locks anyway)

If something is stolen you will know soon enough.
