I've got 5 days off in July which me and my partner intend on going for a short break. We stay up in Aberdeen and got the train to York a couple of years ago for 4 nights. I wanted to go back to York as I'd been twice as a kid and loved it, and going back as an adult it was even better. We considered going back there but want to try somewhere different, however we don't know if there are any similar places that offer so much in one package (i.e. shopping, history, parks, character, friendly people etc).

Would probably be looking somewhere in England or Wales, so any suggestions welcome smile

Chester looks nice, would there be enough to keep you going 4/5 days? Only a 6.5 hour drive from Aberdeen so not too bad (furthest I've drive is to Northampton from here)

edit: Looking on a map maybe 2 nights in Chester followed by 2 nights on Isle of Man maybe a good combo?

We stopped at Chester for a couple of nights on the way to London from Aberdeen a few years ago. It's really nice with the walls, Zoo & City Centre. I used to go there through work & then returned for the stop off.
The Mill is a nice central Hotel but parking was a bit crowded, not sure if still the case.

Bath?

Seems to fit your criteria although a long way from Aberdeen (fly to Bristol?).

It has a pole. Anyone can use it. Even drunk people. Have you no sense of humour?

Cheers guys for the other suggestions, will have a look at these (Edinburgh been to heaps :-)). Bath looks good too, similar size to Chester but a bit more of a trek. I'm happy driving as it's generally cheaper than the train / plane when we split the petrol plus it offers flexibility. Noticed we would be around £240 return for a car ferry to Isle of Man, is it really worth that for going 2 nights?

York is a wonderful city and if I was to ever move down south it would be there!

I live in York. My work moved three years ago and now I commute weekly to Milton Keynes.

The management can't understand why I wouldn't want to move!

I lived in York for 6 years. Loved every day.

Have you considered Bath or Cambridge?;Quite similar.

I'd move to Bath in heart beat if I could.

I wouldn't put Chester in the same league, it's a fine town though.
Bath is worth a visit, quite different from most places (remember it was centrally planned a few centuries ago with amazing results - do not confuse with post war brigade). Still I would get bored of any place like that in more than 2 days but that's just me smile

That would have been my suggestion too however I think it'd get boring after the second night. There isn't a huge amount to do there and you can pretty much see everything worth seeing in 2 days. Nice though.

I've been in Bath for 10 years and not done everything there is to do yet... wink

You should look into splitting up the stay to suit keeping the driving time manageable ie a night half way (ish) down such as Chester/Lake District etc & 3 nights in Cambridge & a further stop on the way back up.

That's what I'd do anyway.

Couple of nights in Chester, then a couple of nights in Stratford upon Avon?
