Nice hotel in London?
Discussion
Hoping someone with experience and/or knowledge can help on this one.
I want to book a decent hotel for a weekend at the start of December. I was (perhaps naively) hoping for 5* but having nothing to start from I'm floundering - the only things that come up on Google are The Dorchester, Claridges, The Ritz etc.
Apart from the prices - which I expected to reflect a 5* rating, but did not expect to top £1k for a weekend away - none of them really look like the sort of hotel I would choose to stay in. They're all... well... a bit traditional. Flowery bedsheets and axminster carpets, that sort of thing.
What I would like is (I hope) relatively simple:
So, you city people - can you help?

What I would like is (I hope) relatively simple:
- Location anywhere in London, really. Close transport links would be a plus but not by any means essential.
- 4 or 5 star quality. It's for a special occasion, I want it to feel like that.
- A modern feel, light and airy - not this... (from The Dorchester's website)

I've quite liked the
Knightsbridge Hotel http://www.firmdalehotels.com/london/knightsbridge...
and
The Zetter Townhouse http://www.thezettertownhouse.com/
Both not five star iirc, but certainly not too traditional, but with excellent service.

Threadneedles opposite BoE is reasonable at the weekend, mainly because the city is dead.

Royal Horseguards, just off embankment. It is 5*, quite modern and very convenient. It is also not too expensive
Edit: it is one of the guoman chain: http://www.guoman.com

Stumbled across the Grange St. Paul's - looks exactly what I had in mind. Anyone ever used it?
Yes, I stayed there just after it opened. It is modern, light and airy. We had a great view of the cathedral from our room too. I think I got a rate of about £95 a night but that was booking through the 'top secret' hotels option on Expedia.Saint Martin's Lane Hotel - http://www.stmartinslane.com
or Hazlitts - http://www.hazlittshotel.com
Both are lovely (or were when I last stayed, about 10 years ago).

Not sure if its a bit far out for you but the Grove in Watford is really nice

Stayed there last year. Cracking place, and the terrace at the back makes a pleasant change. Service was exemplaryhttp://www.montaguehotel.com/

I've been invited to an event there on Monday and wasn't planning on going until I saw this and realised how posh it was! If I end up going, I'll post a review (although only of the dining facilities rather than the rooms)http://www.montaguehotel.com/

Hyatt Regency Churchill....the rooms have the feel you are looking for. It's also got one of London's best restuarants in the same building (though not part of the hotel as such) Locanda Locatelli.

It's literally a five minute walk from Selfridges is SWMBO wants to go shopping and the other way you are five minutes from Marylebone High St which has a great selection of pubs, restaurants and shops.
