We're planning on spending 7-10 days in and around Barcelona and possibly further afield. We're planning our holiday in early September.

We don't really 'do' package deals so we're looking for recommendations for something a bit different like 'owner lets' or even just good value but decent hotels.

So I'd like your recommendations or even if you've got property there that you'd like to let out for this time.

We were previously considering San Sebastian as a left field suggestion

Cheers

We've previously flown to Barcelona and driven the 200km down to Peniscola on the Costa del Azahar which has some fantastic scenery such as the castle where they filmed El Cid and the hill fort town of Morella. We hired a flat on the Nerea Complex which has two communal pools and a secure car park under the flats.

Sounds interesting, do you have any more info? I.e. a link to the flat. It's something like what you've described that I'm after

This is the one we booked on the 3rd floor with a balcony. It was a one bedroom but they do two bedroom flats and 3 bedroom villas round the periphery. Google Apartments Nerea and you'll generally find a good selection.

This complex is about 1/2-1 mile from the castle promontory. You do have to pay to park in the town but it's reasonable.

We've just come back from this region and really enjoyed it. We spent three days in Port Aventura for the kids (used to be owned by Universal Studios and it shows) which I much preferred to Euro Disney. If you like roller coasters then this is fantastic. We then spent four days in a place called Coma Rugga (staying here http://www.hotelmarvelcomarruga.com/Cnt/home.aspx?... ), the beach here is comparable to the Florida Gulf Coast IMO (which really surprised me), as are the beaches up to Calafell, where I was told there is a Hotel/Spa that the Spanish footballers go to (cant remember the name). We then hired a villa for a week further down the Coast at a place called L'ametlla de mar, which was nice but not on my 'go back to' list.

However we did take a trip to a place called Miravet http://www.miravetspain.com an old walled village with a Templar Castle. When there my wife did pick up a leaflet that was outside this place http://www.holidaylettings.co.uk/rentals/miravet/1... which is stunning. This is on my go back to list!!

Out of Barcelona or San Sebastian I would pick San Sebastian ( if that is still in the mix).

Possibly, if you have specific recommendations then that would be great. We're interested in San Seb for the food and wine smile

Baby JS and I did a driving/rough camping holiday around the Picos de Europa in northen Spain a couple of years ago. It's a stunning region. Very rural with some fantastic scenery and driving roads to enjoy. It's a bit "local" and completely unlike any other region of Spain I've been too. Worth a visit.

I live in Barcelona and have explored the region a little. Barcelona is great, especially away from the tourist trail, but outside of Barcelona there are:
Olot (I went this weekend) It has some volcano´s which are a great walk. Also has some stunning villages closeby with a town on a cliff (cannot recall the name)
Girona - Not just an airport, but a lovely place
Vic - Inland as well, but a cracking little town
Llanca - Not my favourite place, but a nice pebbly beach
montserrat - old monestary

And south of Barcelona - Tarragona - visit the old roman walls and eat in the town square or go to the beach

Inside Barcelona - Paco Meralgo for tapas - just the best tapas I have ever tasted. The labarynth for a different afternoon out, Mont Juic castle for cracking views of industrial meets old town. Of course there is always Parc Guell, La Pedrera, Casa batillo, placa catalunya, las ramblas (you have to see it but it´s not my favourite) the cathedral, las arenas (old bullring with great views), tibidabo which is lovely despite the theme park.

Nothing specific, last time I was there we just found a place we liked and went in. Food was great. I'm going back end of August as Mrs 645 hasn't been. We're driving down through France and staying in San Sebastian for a few days then have a meander across the top of Spain to Santiago de Compostela.

Are you getting a car there?

The Northern Bay of Biscay coast has a mountainous region called the Picos De Europe. It has some fantastic roads and scenery. It is also much more unspoilt than many more touristed parts of Spain.

A few of us were there on bikes last Easter. Some of the best roads I'd ever been along, with low levels of traffic. Hardly a UK plate to be seen. No 'Full English Breakfast' cafes either.

We were trying to avoid getting a car but could do I suppose, I'll look into that area, cheers
