Apologies for thread hijack 
I'd also like some advice on Thailand.
I have a significant birthday at the beginning of December and would like to spend it out of the country, with Thailand as my preference. Problem is that the Wifebeast only has 6 days left to take off work so with weekends we can spend a maximum of 10 days out of the UK.
Would like to spend 3-4 days in Bankok and the rest near a nice beach.
Interested in culture, beer, scenery, beer, relaxation, beer, diving/snorkling, beer, Thai food, beer. Not interested in partying, in fact would like to avoid that sort of place.
Budget for accommodation ideally would be up to £100 a night but can be flexible for the right place.

You can buy the hotel for that much in Thailand. Pretty much.Get yourself to Chaweng beach Koh Samui, plenty of nightlife, great powder soft sandy beach, cheap eats and drinks and decent shopping.

with 6 days holiday, plus the weekends, you could do this.....
Fly LHR-BKK on EVA. You will leave LHR at 21.30 Hrs on lets say a Friday, so should get away with working a full day that day.
That will get you into BKK at about 15.30 Hrs the following day. Transfer to your hotel in the city and stay 3 nights. That means you'll leave BKK on Tuesday morning. Back to the airport and fly to Samui/Phuket/Trat/Krabi to enjoy the beach. If you get an early flight, you could be at your hotel by bthe beach in time for 11.00 AM coffee, if not earlier.
This would then leave you about a week by the beach.
For your return flight on your last day, get the earliest flight off the island (around 0745 - 0800 Hrs) to make your EVA flight home, departing at about 1230 Hrs and getting binto LHR at around 19.30 Hrs. Back to work the next moring.
Which island you head for will depend on the time of year.
In terms of your budget, 100 quid per night will get you a very good room in a good, central hotel in Bangkok. Rooms are more expensive on the islands, if you want any reasonable level of luxury.
Again, time of year will influence the room rates hugely.
If you want to avoid the party scene, there are some areas that you need to stay well away from. It's not difficult though.
Thailand is a wonderful, diverse country,with a huge amount to offer the traveller.

I went in Feb with a mate (both mid 20's) for 3 weeks, have to say Koh samui was the most disappointing part of the holiday, for the cost to get there aswell, I wouldn't go back, we missed the full moon party but they do look like a lot of fun!
I wont go into detail as I have no idea what you are after from the hols, but stuff to bear in mind:
where to fly from? direct flights are just from London I think, we flew from Brum with Emirates for £580 with a 1 night stop in Dubai (arrived early morning, left late the next night so perfect!) gave us chance to see Dubai and 2 days is enough IMO! but also broke up what is a very long flight.
Bangkok is MENTAL, imo it would be crazy to go for a cheapo place here, we were lucky enough to stay at the Lebua right near the top so the view was awesome, the room and the hotel was just unreal, even by Thai standards! and it was just great to have somewhere to escape the heat and craziness to, plus right near the main canal ferry terminal and skytrain so easy to get to anywhere in the city, I preferred the silom area of Bangkok, the main shopping area we went to was vastly overpriced and could have been anywhere in the world with its massive shopping centre and hard rock cafes etc.
Chang mai, definitely worth a look, loved it there
Kanchanburi - bus ride from Bangkok for £3 or so, best part of our holiday really, dirt cheap, Ewaran? waterfalls was awesome, tiger temple great and the Italian girls we met were rather nice too
lots of young backpackers here. bridge over the river kwai is a joke though along with the museum.
I spent months researching and planning our trip getting nice hotels but atthe cheapest price, Koh samui was the most expensive part and as said very disappointing, would rather go and try Phi Phi or elsewhere, but depends on when you are going as to which side of the country is best.
oh and whenever you get a taxi, make sure you ask them to put it on the meter!!

Got to agree with the above, Koh Samui isn't great. I once spent a day there waiting for a flight to Kuala Lumpur. Not a nice place unless you want Benidorm in Asia.

I'm off to Thailand as part of a longer trip, probably around November. My rough plan is to include Bangkok briefly, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Ko Phi Phi, Railay and the Similian Islands over a couple of weeks or so.

oh god yes you have to take a tuk tuk and some point! we didnt use them in Bangkok but in chiang Mai they were great! had room to take take backroads and short cuts, just tell them to go for it!, one ride we took was like something out of grand theft auto! also our trip from one hotel to the other in Chiang mai, 2 lads plus allour suitcases and bags loaded one was hilarious, we were hanging out the sides.
They are great things! A friend of a friend was working at a posh hotel in Bangkok a few years ago, so I met up with him, went for dinner etc, then he had to go back to work. He left me in the capable hands of one of the hotel's drivers in a tuk-tuk. It was a right laugh scaring people in Patong with some noisy and very slow acceleration.
pattaya is probably the best place in Thailand for people your age, nice beach jet ski's, Awesome nightlife, posh hotels 20 quid a night. Been on own and with my wife and intend to go there every January until we move out there to retire. Check out pattayaaddicts.com for more info (not safe for work)
Islands on the east side of the peninsula and west side have different temperaments, different sea and different monsoon times:-
East: More lively / more parties. Sea choppier typically.
West: Prettier, more laid-back / picture postcard.
The bigger the resort, the more touristy it's going to be, typically. Chaweng had a Tesco's 7 years ago, for example.

ment to say before, if you are going to Thailand for the party's, then I wouldn't overly bother, thing I loved about Thailand was we could go to the party's and nights out and drink dirt for peanuts, BUT I can do that in malia or ibiza etc, thing for me was exploring a totally different country and way of life too, such an awesome place to do a bit of everything
