Spain? Italy? Which is best....?
Discussion
We're spending at least 3 weeks, maybe more driving over the water. So far we're only booked into a hotel in Champagnes as stop no. 1, and we will have full camping gear with us. We're looking at Lyon as a second stop, but from there? We'd originally planned to head for the east coast of Italy, but then, why not Spain instead? We're leaving via Calais on Wednesday - any opinions/ideas? Many thanks
Mt wife was stationed in Gibraltar for a few years when she was in the RAF, and visited lots of Southern Spain to places that were off the beaten track and away from the tourist spots. She's never had the inclination to go back to Spain.
We can vouch for Italy, as we've driven there a few times and stayed in "normal" Italian towns (like Villafranca), and visited places not on the usual tourist trail (like Borghetto / Mantova / Desenzano). The locals - especially if you try to speak Italian - are really friendly.

Spain has some fantastic inland scenery and roads to explore but if you're camping in the middle of summer I'd suggest Italy, being cooler, is the better bet as you'll find a tent uncomfortable at 30+c during the night. If you're willing to put up with that, then try the Pyrenees down to Burgos/Pamplona where it will be cooler...
