Hi guys,

I need to get a month's martial arts refresher training in later this year and would prefer to go to Thailand.

However, my whole life I have been a magnet for flying, biting creatures. I have heard that following the floods last year the little buggers are everywhere.

What I really need to know is how bad is it?

Preferably, I would like to go to a camp in Pattaya but will try Bangkok if the mossies are out of control at the former.

Am I just being a wimp and should just man up and go?

I'm scared of getting Dengue fever and dying out there!!

All advice much appreciated.

I've never actually been to Thailand, so it's just a guess, but as a tropical country i suspect the little blighters are everywhere anyway hehe

Just had 2 weeks in Thailand (Chiang Mai, Samui, Bangkok) - no bites at all. Just use decent repellent and you will be fine.

There are more mozzies back in the UK and I've been bitten twice since being back :-(

Get a proper mosquito repellent with a high DEET% and you should be ok(ish).

Just watch out for the chixwithdicks variety. I've heard they can be a right pain in the ass getmecoat

Seriously Typhoid and Hep A innoculations recommended. There is a long list of others but these should cover you. Malaria risk varies dependent on where you are in Thailand so check up on requirements.

"The risk is low in most of Thailand, and visitors to most tourist areas, including Bangkok, Chang Ri and the coastal holiday resorts of Pattaya, Phuket and Koh Samui do not need to take antimalarials."

Use plenty of spray as suggested, the buggers are biting me like crazy here in Krabi!

Not supposed to be a malrial problem, UNLESS your heading for a border area. My youngest is on a 4 month trekking trip, and had to but a LOT of malarone tablets, £250 worth for her trip, as it involves the areas that link to Cambodia, Vietnam and Laos.

In Thailand itself, yes you'll get bitten but the risk of malaria is deemed to be low.

Thanks for the replies.

It's Dengue and Japanese Death bites I'm scared of.

As someone allergic to mosquito bites (I've even been signed off work for a week by an NZ doc in the past, despite having three weeks of holiday left) I don't feel you need to man up at all smile

Good luck. Muay Thai?

Are you entering the Tekken tournament? Kick Bamboo and practice fighting with a bandanna over your eyes. You will be fine.

.
Forget the spray stuff.
Generally not strong enough.
Get the hand applied liquid stuff.
Just tip a spoon of the stuff into a palm of your hand and lash it on, repeat, until your covered, repeat after 3 hours.
Generally the legs, arms, face, then legs again !
