I am beginning to think of next years trip, and want to consider another US road trip. However i am struggling to get started on a route.

I like the outdoors, and am not bothered about visiting cities for more than a couple of days. This trip would be 3-4weeks, and can cover 1,500miles/week.

I have already been to:
Cities: NYC, Boston, LV, LA, SD, SF, SLC
Parks: Yellowstone, Grand Teton, Grand Canyon, Capitol Reef, Bryce, Zion, Death Valley, Yosemite
Other: PCH

Any ideas are welcome smile The stand out places at the moment are Glacier NP, and around Moab, but that is by no means a requirement. Alaska looks interesting also, but i'm not sure how to fit that with anything!

Washington DC area and the Appalachians. I'm off there in the "fall".

-edit-

For 3-4 weeks you could probably do most of Tennessee and the Carolinas too. Everything's pretty close together on that side.

With your time frame I'd be looking at the Route 66 option (it winds from Chicago to LA more than 3,000 miles all the way etc)

thumbup For the Route 66 idea, Wife and I did it last year and it was fantastic, could have just turned round and done the whole thing again. Also try reading There and Back Again by Tim Watson for ideas for a good couple of routes.

I'm not interested in Route 66 really. Most of it's gone anyway!

I am young(ish) and would like a little adventure, but am struggling to sort this one!

Alaska - the haul road, glacier national parks, cross into northern canada for the top of the world highway, the cassiar and the alcan.

Cannot recommend highly enough, especially if you've had a good dose of the lower 48.

It's definately frontier country and you will need to be prepared but if you like the outdoors and want an adventure you will struggle to top it.

American top gear tested some scabby old trucks up there, begins to give you a feel for the country.

I must admit I fell more than a little bit in love with it all. Still got my certificate for dipping in the artic sea somewhere as well, (the most touristy part of it all!)

My first random route idea:

- Seattle (inc Olympic NP)
- Glacier NP
- Badlands NP
- Chicago
- Indianapolis (Indy 500)
- Finish somewhere on the east coast (probably not NYC/Boston... ideas?)

It's probably too far though! My last roadtrip in the US was ~2,000miles on Google maps, but i did 4,500 wink

Hi Mat.

Me and a friend are Doing another road trip this year. Iirc we did a similar one to you last year at the same time. Mammoth lakes etc? We land on Friday and can't wait.

We are doing a fair few miles more than you. Bit will include wwe(yeah yeah smile)/nfl/NASCAR/a few museums etc .

But the main thing is the entire 459 miles of the blue ridge parkway. Give it a google. It looks fantastic and is a proper road road. What car are you going in? We went on a Mustang last year but after too much luggage and hitchhikers and giving lifts to fireman, we have opted for a jeep grand Cherokee.
