Hello.

I was just wondering what sort of prices I would be thinking of if I were to go on mini-break to Monaco for the weekend as it is always one place I want to visit. I know prices can get silly, even for the short weekend like what I am planning but just as a estimate what would I be looking at would be much appreciated.

My idea is to fly in on a Friday PM and leaving Sunday lunch-time(ish) via a cheap last minute deal like Ryanair/Easyjet. My main reason to go there is the cars outside the casino, (although I will not go into spend at the casino) and to also have a look/walk around the Formula 1 track. Is there any decent hotels in/nearby Monaco for two nights? I doubt I could rent a car at a normal rate due to my age but if any companies you know of then tell me.

So just to sum up, I am looking at advise on the following:

- Budget for hotels in/around Monaco?

- Could I rent a car at my age?

- What would an average day of food cost?

I am thinking close to £400-£550 for the weekend dependant on if I can get a rental? Am I in a dreamworld? The idea occured to me a while ago when I read a PH'ers (The Crack Fox) adventures. thumbup

Note: I would not be planning this weekend till around April/May 2013.

Hi james,
Easy jet are the only people that fly near monaco
into Nice.
No such thing as a late deal.. The further in advance you book
the cheaper it will probably be..
Look on something like booking.com and book hotel in nice, ideally near train station.
If you cant rent a car a train into monaco or a bus from nice is the best option.
Its only about 20 miles away.
Train route is a lot more scenic as it folows coastline.
Monaco is an amazing place, with an abundant display of wealth.
Once there everything is within walking distance.
Dont be put of by high prices..not as unreasonable as people make out.
Imo having a 5 euro coffee sitting at cafe de paris on casino square its
the cheapest drink in the world considerung whats around you.
If you want to eat cheaply, theres a supermarket opposite the harbour, near the start line of grand prix.
Do it.. Its an amazing experience..
Hope this helps
Paul
A few euros will sort you out.

I did Monaco earlier this year - We flew into and stayed in Nice however.

One short bus journey from Nice airport to the hotel and Monaco is very scenic train trip away along the coast. Monaco station is inside a mountain! A restaurant over looking the harbour was actually quite reasonable yikes: .We visited at the beginning of April and the preparations for the GP had started its a lot more compact than it looks on the TV.

Nice is fab place in its own right and I think Monaco is better as a day trip destination. So much so that we are going back next year.

Hi

When we stayed in Monaco for two nights in May out hotel was £200 per night. We got a good deal I thought as it was right on the harbour with harbour view, and the room it's self was lovely. It's called hotel port palace. We found it on hotels.com, there were definitely cheaper options aswell.
Parking was a bit expensive, I think we paid 40€ per day for hotel parking. And we didn't use the car whilst we were there, you can see everything on foot in one day. So If you don't need a car, and aren't bothered about seeing what's outside of Monaco I would save the money.
Food can be done cheap. One of our meals was 40€ at a small Italian on the harbour. That 2 of us having 2 courses. It's the famous places that are expensive. Cafe Paris on casino square was around €100 for 3 courses that wern't very good. And the stars bar breakfast was around €40 for 2.
So it can be done fairly cheap but we found the standard of food to be pretty poor, I reckon you'd need to spend serious money to get a good meal.
There's also a mini supermarket on the harbour, so you could get something there for a couple of euros.

Novotel Monte Carlo is the cheapest I found. Just stayed there a few days ago and it was £145 for the night. I booked several months in advance. It's 5 mins from casino square and the harbour. Excellent location.

If you like exploring cities it's excellent, despite it being quite tiny, the ups and downs and little staircases everywhere can take it out of you! We did two days and walked pretty much the entire place from the beaches past Monte Carlo (rent a jet ski and go yacht spying biggrin) to Fonteville and the excellent views from near the palace.

If you are just doing the trip to Monaco don't bother trying to get a car. It's busy and expansive to park for 24+hours.

We got the train in, it's a fantastic route along the coast.

You could always get a chopper from Nice airport. Takes 7 mins into Monaco Heliport wink

Thanks for the replies - much appreciated.

I think my budget is on the cheap side. All the advice given has been helpful. I think I will catch the train from the airport and although the helicopter sounds appealing I will have to give it a miss. I did not thinking of renting anything special, just like a Fiesta (or similar) as a mode of transport but I gather it may be more trouble than it is worth.

I think the hotels will take the majority of the budget but I do not mind spending a tad more for a nicer place and/or location like the ones mentioned. It helps to know an estimate of prices and to also know there is a supermarket close by..

I think on reflection, I may pass on the car (unless there are places people recommend outside of Monaco) and with the money saved in parking, fees I could rent a jet-ski as I had not previously thought about that. Is the weather fairly consisant and generally warm?!

I am getting more and more excited about it. I think a visit to hotels.com and/or trivago is in order.

Thanks again for replies - and keep more suggestions coming. thumbup

You probably won't want to hear this but you'd have a better time staying in Nice and getting the train to Monaco for the day and coming back to Nice in the evening.

Not sure if I agree. I went last summer and spent most of the time in Monaco despite staying in Nice. Monaco nightlife is great and you'll find yourself wandering about until the early hours. Plus that's when all the cars come out. Saying that, the trains are brill, frequent and cheap.

I went to Monaco again in April for the Top Marques and Masters Tennis, stayed in Monaco this time (this hotel, amazing value http://www.hotelboeri.com/tarifs-et-offres/. They even offered us free Top Marques tickets (50 euros normally) as some of the organisers were staying there but we'd already got free tickets with GT Spirit so kindly declined in case anyone else needed them). If you do decide to stay in Monaco, you won't need a car. It's only about 3 miles long so everything is walkable. Weather was great for April. I didn't think I'd need sunglasses or suncream but it was 20+ degrees every day and not a drop of rain while I was there.

I'm just booking my trip for next April. All but about 3 hotels are fully booked already for some reason, I only booked it in January and had no trouble so I don't know why it's so busy this time! I've been checking easyjet every day for the past couple of months waiting for them to release flights for April. Should only be about £30 each way. Anyone know when the will release them? I asked them and was told they're still working on schedules, but I thought they were just waiting until the start of a new month.

Best way to get from the Airport to Monaco is the bus to Nice Ville (10/15 minutes, 1 Euro) then the train to Monaco (20 minutes, 3 Euros I think). Or you can just get a chopper, 7 minutes and 110 euros each way hehe

Can I just jump in and ask how far from the station it is to the harbour if your walking? Me and parents are going for the GP next year but as I have cerebral palsy, want to avoid walking lots if i can help it, especially if its hot.

The train station is about 5 stories tall within a mountain (sounds quite James bond hehe) and once you get the lift down to the bottom it's about 90 seconds walk to the harbour front.

Not sure on what access down that route will be like on GP weekend mind....

I have been on hotels.com and it appears a good hotel with a view of the yatchs is around £130.00 per night - it is cheaper than I thought, but is that normal for an average/nice hotel?

I have also upped my budget to around £650. smile

Having stayed at the Metropole and HdP, the best place to stay is in the Port Palace, fantastic roof terrace restaurant overlooking the harbour and great service.

Should c. £250 a night from memory.

Booked my Monaco weekend away tonight for the Top Marques in April. Easyjet released the flights just a few days ago so I got them for less that £60 return.

Ended up booking this place. I was going to stay at the Novotel but they don't seem to do a 'proper' triple room, and this was cheaper for a 6-person apartment.

Just need to wait until next month when the Tennis tickets are released then I'm all set!
