Railcard is for 16-25 or those with a child 5-15 years old and the child must travel with you.

None are valid to me but also none will be giving any discount for the times I'm looking at.

This one is valid to anyone who pays: http://www.railcard.co.uk/network - however, as you say it can't be used before 10am and I'm not sure it's valid for first class either (certainly the machines don't entertain the notion!)

Personally for that journey which I do often enough (occasionally getting on earlier anywhere from Newbury - Theale) it's really not worth it.
I can't actually remember a time I've even got a seat, and usually end up standing by the 'bar' or between carriages.
Personally I'd be happier with the money, or using it elsewhere. Drinks or a reasonable meal in the city.

I usually either have my iPad, or phone & headphones with me, or even just reading the evening standard can pass the journey time.

Depending on where I have to get to, I'll often now try and plan it so I go into Waterloo from Basingstoke, as although the journey is twice as long, I'm nearly always guaranteed a seat, and don't have to deal with or give any money to FGW!
