Save your flight time, just 6 hours, none or just 1 hour time difference depending when you go (because our clocks change). Draw back for some people is that it is an up and coming area, so entertainment is a little scarce,we like it that way though, Thomson have pretty much the monopoly on Hotels but there are exceptions. You can spend Euros, the locals are friendly, and it averages 26 to 30 degrees all year round, normally we have found it to be mid 30s, if that is hot enough for you, and you are unlikely to even see a cloud in November to April. Bugs diseases and creepy crawlies cannot get there from the mainland so no jabs are necessary, and you can walk out at night without getting bitten by mozzies. There is a choice of islands, each with their own style, so pick the one that suits you. To give you some idea, Hotel reception at Riu Garopa in Santa Maria, has not got a complete roof on it, there is no need, just a few palm trees for shade.
We first went 6 years ago, and have been back different times of year, every year since. We tried Tobago this year, but still cannot get enough of this place, so we are gonna be there December, to relax and soak up the sun.

Where ??
.
Sal in the islands of Cabo Verde, 400 miles off the West African Coast, Banjul in Gambia is the nearest mainland place.
Boa Vista would be our second choice, friends will be there the second week of December.

Well good luck to wherever you go. I am sure the travel guru's on here can provide you with the best information and guidance. I live in Hawaii and the UK and fly the atlantic and Pacific several times a year so know nothing.

Calm down, its just that the OP said he is only going for 7 or 9 days and does not wish to travel far. Hawaii is obviously a great place, that I would like to visit but, I guess the budget would be stretched and travelling time would be nearer 18 hours or more from UK wouldn't it.?

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated

Sri Lanka is looking likely at the minute. Had a look at Cape Verde a few years ago, can't remember why I didn't go in the end.

I would like to go to Hawaii, somebody in work went, but coupled it with a week in San Francisco. That seemed like a good idea, so would want to couple it with something like that. Unfortunately my girlfriend hasn't got that much time off work. Otherwise it would have been Thailand for a few weeks.

Dubai.

The weather is perfect in November / December, reaching the mid to high 20s.

Great hotels, some good beaches.

Photos above taken last weekend at Jumeirah Al Qasr.
