Venice next month
Discussion
Hi all,
We are off to Venice next month (8th), for 4 days. It's a surprise for the OH as she thinks we are off to Edinburgh and I also plan to pop the question.
Anyway I digress, we fly into Treviso airport and our hotel is by San marks square, I'm trying to arrange getting us there but I'm getting confused with the bus/water taxi etc. If anyone could help that would be great.
Also after some recommendations on places to go, things to do and places to eat. So again any help would be great.

When we've been there, we've just hopped on a shuttle. As for getting around by water taxi / vaporetto, it's a piece of cake - there are plenty of them, the routes and stops are clearly mapped out and very easy to decipher.
The shuttle is a good and effective solution to/from the airport. You could use a private water taxi but, phew, the price!! Classsy and impressive though.
Once there, Venice is great on foot. Use the vaparetto...waterbus...for top to bottom of the Grand Canal, with regular stops.
Get the ferries to the islands..these depart on the eastern side of Venice, not near st. Marks Sq.
For the Lido I think these can be picket up near St. Marks Sq.
I suppose you'll have to go on a gondola. They are usually for 45 minutes and are even more expensive than a private water taxi.

Flooding (Acqua Alta) is related to the tides, not the weather - we were last there one December, and it was fairly bad on two of the three days.
If you're doing it properly, a private water taxi from the airport is the way to go. It's expensive, but you'll only see Venice for the first time once - do it from a private boat. Save money later by eating lots of pizza slices on the street.
The main tourist areas (Rialto, St Marks) will be busier during the day when the day-trippers are in. As you're staying, you have the luxury of being there at the quieter times, and I'd recommend exploring the other areas during the day. Walk the city at dusk or dawn if you can. Covering the whole city on foot is entirely possible, but the vaporetto water buses are an essential part of the experience - buy a multi-day pass.
It must be at least a couple of months since I last wheeled these out:

apart from the fact that treviso airport is landlocked
a return coach ticket to venice from treviso is 14 euro, it takes you to the bus station at the foot of the islands. from there, walk over the new footbridge to the vaporetto station. buy a tourist pass to cover the duration of your stay as you'll use it loads and you also get free entry to the main museums around st. marks.
