So, I'm looking at booking some flights and fancy some comfort.

Obviously the chance of free upgrades has pretty much gone and I don't mind paying, so am I better just paying for the Biz class far at time of booking, or wait until I get to airport and pay for one of the "on the day" upgrades.

Taking a risk I know, but is this cheaper/more expensive?

Am thinking Virgin/Emirates if that makes a difference.

IF you really want an upgrade pay for it now. Chances at airport are very close to zero (unless you have paid full economy fare and have a frequent flyer card). Doing it at the airport won't save much if anything, Or you could always pay at check-in for exit row seats.

Not true - depends who you are flying with. BA often offer $800 one way upgrades from economy to business at the check in desk on transatlantic flights. $700 from WTP to business - go figure. Last time I asked and was offered this was last Sunday.

From cattle to slightly more leg room and less grump staff. wink
Peasant.

If you mean PE then my experience was the staff were more grumpy (by some margin) than in economy.

What can I say.
The upgrade comes out of my pocket.
I had to travel Virgin this time or would have used my BA miles.

Anyway, could you not have cycled?
