We are looking to book a nice holiday for next april. Our original plan was to book a 14 night cruise around southern caribean, but the dates dont match for us to make it possible. So now we are looking for alternatives and we ideally would like to go to either barbados or antigua.

Ive been on about 10 cruises so have visited barbados and antigua everytime but only during 9am -4pm. Has anyone spent 2 weeks on either island that can give me some insight in which would be best. It would be a beach holiday with a little bit of sightseeing too, and we would like to keep the cost under £4k (inc food) for both of us plus spending money on trips etc 9ideally less if possible)

Are both places safe after dark? .Are we better all inclusive or doing our food thing for food? Any hotels that are recommended? etc

Thanks

Barbados - more specifially Sugar Cane Club.

Spent time there a while back. Amazing.

Barbados is very safe. I went to fuel up the hire car one night late - there was a group of MASSIVE young lads hanging around the door of the shop. I mean they were ENORMOUS! Dressed like Snoop, the fuill gang gear.

I sh t it.

As I approched the door, the biggest meanest one said "good evening sir" and opened the door for me.

One should never make assumptions!!

Great place.

Don't go to Oystins - it's crap.

I've been Barbados a few times but stayed with my aunts out there. Very safe and relaxing. The missus is from Jamaica and has been to Antigua and said compared to Jamaica it felt like she was on an old person's holiday. Make of that what you will.

You'll get all inclusive for less than your budget here.

Call them direct and ask to speak to Roddy.

This makes me smirk. Ive seen a few offers for the SCC and it looks pretty good. I am though a touch reluctant to A) frequent a place Soovy knows of and B) to ring up a bloke called Roddy and tell him The Soovster sent me!

I am unsure as to whether on my arrival for my nice holiday with my wife I would be met with a cpl of extra hookers in the room, a cpl of kilos of white powder or some very large chaps called Dwayne and Wayne who would be looking to relieve me of all my wordly goods.

hehe

I'm flattered, but really it's fine. Tell him you've been recommended by a mate who is a lawyer in London.

He'll know me.

This man speaks sense.

Similar experience in bridgetown, hired a car, parked up and walked past what can only be described as a Skyscraper with Dreads into a nearby bar, a minute later he's towering over me, I brick it as he's now got 2 mates with him and I'm on my own waiting for the wife who's in the loo.

Antigua is lovely, but it's a very small island, with little to see and do other than relax on the beach. That may, of course, be exactly what you are looking for, but I found 1 week there plenty, and i'm not sure how we would have occupied ourselves for a second week.

I agree with the above, beautiful place but I was bored after a week. Lying on a beach is just not my thing, however if its what you are after Antigua would be great for it.

We've been to Antigua specifically Coco bay - which as it turns out you can see the cabin that honeymoon couple were murdered in about a mile further down the beach.

Honestly we didn't know about that location until we arrived and if we had been told we certainly wouldn't have gone due to that reason. However we did and all the locals there commented about how that could (the male) had been walking down the town late at night putting rolls of cash on the counters and buying lots of drugs - turns out from what the locals said he ordered more but wanted it delivered to his cabin. He ten wanted to renegotiate the price things got heated and sadly two ended up dead.

Now that aside they were arrested and are servicing life and it is life with hard labour.

All the locals and the staff we met were the most hospital people.

Cocobay is an exceptional all inclusive resort they take service to a different level but it is a very small resort no more than 25 cabins most with your own plunge pool looking out into the Antiguan blue sea.
The food is Al la cart you can upgrade to have lobster which isn't a lot but the menu is superb as is, it also isn't the same over a 2 week period.
Infinity pool and idyllic private beach.

Its adults only.

You can get a boat out to Barbuda to see the pink beach and stay.

We would go there again without question - check out trip advisor and you will see the countless comments.

Oh lunch time they have fish (or other options) but if you have fish its caught that morning by a small local boat which you see coming in after breakfast.

It is a very relaxing holiday.

My wife was bitten alive though by mosquitoes and also badly by sand flies luckily I don't usually get bitten.

You could go the whole Sandles resort which is vast and stunning too but we loved Cocobay - the cleaners to groundsmen waiters reception staff etc all know your name a lovely touch nothing we could ask for was beyond asking.

Oh one thing for the evening meal men have to wear long cotton trousers as the ladies are expected to be in smart dress. I initially thought it would be a pain but it does make a notable difference.

Oh if you go there ask Sacha one of the bar ladies for her special rum punch or rasta special cocktail.

Booze wise they stop at 11pm sharp - you can if you choose load up your table & many an evening we stayed up to see sunrise the bars all open so help yourself and provided you put glasses in sink its cool. Te idea is generally its a tranquil place for relaxation and some guests/most may want quiet. The bar is away from the cabins so not an issue.

Do pay the £5per day air con madness not to

Wish we could go again but having a child means well not be able to go there until we're in our 50's....

Personally I preferred sailing round the islands but the hotel wasn't bad for a hotel.

Comments about a murder in Antigua
I assume you are referring to the murders of Ben and Catherine Mullany in 2008.

I remember reading about this case, and I don't recall any reports of the couple buying drugs. As far as I am aware, there was no evidence of this presented at the trial. The motive of the murder was stated as robbery.

Do you have any sources or evidence to substantiate your comments? If so, I would be interested to read them. If not, perhaps your comments should be removed.

Evidence would be directly from local people who live there (as per my post) who told the story and as it turns out I asked a number of different people while there who all gave the same line.

Note drug buying in Antigua apart from Rastas is illegal and if in possession or a seller you are in for 20 years.

The locals knew that story at the time as were acquatly aware that UK press were not even reporting it for some reason.

As such no my comments will not be removed - unless I was lied to en mass by individuals who had no connection and were unaware I'd asked someone else.

But DO go on the Cool Runnings night sunset cruise. Swimming with turtles. A life enhancing moment!

Another vote for the Cool Runnings cruise - I did the all dayer and had such a ball.

Never been to Antigua so can't compare.

It may be safer than some of the islands but it is still pretty dodgy.

If you're planning April, last week in Antigua is Sailing Week so you'll get to seem some amazing boats racing round the island. Classic week is mid April and you can get to English Harbour to see some classic big boats.

Been to both and wouldnt bother going back to Antigua. Certainly didnt feel safe going into town to get some medicine for the kids. Got chatting to the cab driver on the way who was adament he would escort me to the chemist. When we came out I knew why, a small crowd of local scumbags had gathered outside and were pretty much waiting to rinse me of my cash, actually started to get nasty with the cabby offering a few of them out and telling them to fk off..

I dont have a goatee or do crav manga janga but am no pushover, dont usally get much trouble.

Barbados on the other hand was amazing, felt safer walking around Holetown than London. Never had any moments to be concerned about and we toured the islands, driving through some of the rougher neighbourhoods and never felt threatened.

I learnt from another cabbie that nobody in the carribean can move to barbados as you have to be born there or have a lot of ££ to get in. He was telling me they have made a big effort to keep out Jamaicans etc which wasnt the case for other islands, including barbados. The Antiguan cabbie said his island had been ruined by Yarde's drugs and trash from jamaca.

If its good enough for Cliff, its good enough for me!

We didn't see anything like this, we hired a car and toured the whole island. Maybe things are changing for the worse! frown
