Been to Garda as a child. Can't comment on Como.

Don't think I've ever been to a more beautiful part of the world. It's just lovely around there and within close proximity of the Alps and the great passes around there too.

Food wasn't amazing and the variety of places to eat isn't great but you'll find some gems I'd imagine. Anywhere with a view onto the lake is good enough in reality.

Garda is stunning, I'd recommend Bardilino, haven't been to Como.

Here's the thing,I have been to both but also to Lake Maggiore which was by far the best. I also saw countless exotics drive hard and none better than the F40 that was getting about. We stayed near La Isola bella, which is just amazing.

There is a little used car showroom about 15 minutes south of lame Como that' specialises in things like old Integrales that's worth a look if you find it he usually has some amazing low mileage examples of Italian exotica that long since rusted away in the uk.

I also enjoyed Lake Maggiore more than Como (haven't been to Garda).

Stresa was a good place to stay and good trips out from there. Como was very busy and hard to park.

I've been to Maggiore and Como once, Garda twice. I'd go to Garda a third time before either of the others for a second time.

I've only been to Garda but it is lovely. Southern end a bit touristy and towns seem to get better further up the lake you go. Going back soon hopefully.

Gardone is interesting (warship in a garden!)

+1 Lake Iseo is a lovely place, but not as geared up to tourism.

I do like Garda lots though, used to go there as kids and have returned a couple of times with our kids

Stayed in Como a couple of years back. Very very pleasant. It will be touristy however come summer time. Some photos from my Euro write up:

Day 9 & 10
Miles on the clock: 163482
Locations: Aulla to Lake Como & Lake Lugano day trip
Total miles: 243

The Italian adventure continued with a drive to the Italian Lakes, more specifically Lake Como. A lovely part of the world with genuinely beautiful scenery. Yes, there are tourist traps (you can see the SAGA coaches a mile off) but choose the right places for lunch and dinner and it is a very very pleasant experience and you need not interact with any other English tourists. Not too shabby for photos either!

We did a short day trip to Switzerland to visit Lake Lugano. I forgot how clean Switzerland is. I also forgot (much to the detriment of my wallet) how expensive it is!

g3org3y you bugger, you do realise those photos make me very tempted to book another holiday there this year and I was DETERMINED we weren't going anywhere near Italy this year.

Thats the place, Stresa was a great town to base the visit from, we were living down in a little town on the Ligurian coast at the time, so it was only a few hours drive to get there.

Having done a lot of research we have just booked our holiday on the northern tip of Lake Garda at Parc Hotel Flora.

Can't wait.

Has anyone been to Italy this year? If so, what's the cost like?

We went to Amalfi the year before last and it was breathtakingly expensive, which seemed to be due to the Italian economy, exchange rate and tendency for local businesses to increase prices as a response to having fewer customers.

We we in Amalfi last September and thought it was good value for money.

(E.g: food and drink cheaper than uk)

We spent on average £100 a day
