I'm planning on going to New York next spring, 5 days in New York then renting a car to head towards Toronto and then back to the east coast to see out the rest of the holiday in Boston.

Flights from Heathrow are about £450 return to JFK (economy, I'm not a fussy traveller) however if I do LHR > JFK then BOS > LHR this comes to about £750. Is there a way of bringing this down as it seems airlines like to shaft you for one way flights?

Never mind, it's £500 with BA.. biggrin

Is it worth waiting out for any flight sales?

That sounds like good value to me. I'd get it booked if I were you.

Eta, 90% of that fare will be taxes and fuel surcharges that the airline are unlikely to discount I suspect.

£500 sounds very good to me, especially when it's not on one of the more "value-oriented" carriers.

It's where the tickets are booked via one airline but the actual flight is carried out by one of their code share partners.

BA are better than AA in every respect. I travelled to NYC a lot this year and last and whilst the BA flights were a pleasure, the AA flights were a real drag.

Look at the flight number. If booked via BA the website will advise if a code share.

Yeah they will have a BA flight number even if operated by another airline. Like the chap above said, the website should tell you when you're booking it.

Codeshares also do- except they are usually distinguishable by having 4 digits instead of three. But on the booking page there will be 'operated by' and an AA logo next to it. Cant miss it.

From memory (and having done lhr-jfk literally hundreds of times), the BA flights are 117, 175, 113, 177, 173, 115, 179 and 183 and currently all are operated by a 777 except for the first two and the last one.
The one you want back is 178.

If you want try the 787 screamliner, the second and third flights into newark (EWR) have this, and it should cost the same as JFK. However, Newark airport is a hole, immigration is generally awful for non citizens and it is and a pain to get to by anything except train, so factor that in.

Aye, the BA777s are great - even in economy.

Some AA flights to New York are on new 777-300 ER's.

We flew last year to NY on an AA flight,(older 777) and back from Orlando with BA, and were perfectly happy with AA.

I don't really mind Newark - I found it a bit quicker to get through than JFK and it's quicker to get to downtown Manhattan by quite a lot. Also (and this might make the deal), car rental is much, much cheaper in New Jersey.
