Any recommendations for hotels/travel companies etc? First Choice seems to be the obvious answer, but am I missing something?

Thanks

We went with Thomson and stayed in a Riu Palace hotel, very good it was too.

By the way, Playa is in Riviera Maya.

I enjoyed the playa del carmen as you could walk down to 5th avenue at night for a shop, so wasnt just stuck in your hotel.

Try Blue Bay Travel. We used them last year to to to Tulum and they were very good. If you are after a bit of culture the hotel / location choice will be different to a beach / night club holiday.

We loved the Hotel Catalonia Riviera Maya which we booked through Thomson, so much so we went there 2 years in a row.

We stayed 2 weeks just north of playa in October. Loved every minute.

Thomson flies the Dreamliner to cancun, which I found a nice experience compared to most long haul flights. I'm 6'5" and had enough room in a standard aisle seat.

Most of the hotels look great, but we heard from some people that the cheaper hotels are a bit tired in terms of condition and decor. We stayed at the Azul Fives hotel, which is much quieter than others we heard about, but very nice. I suppose it depends on what you want.

I'd try and stay a shortish taxi ride outside playa, so you've got access to the nightlife and restaurants in town when you want it. The beach clubs are great for a late night drink on the sand, and there's countless bars and restaurants on or near 5th avenue.

The riu has 5 resorts on the playa car gated resort which is walking distance from town. We stayed in the riu tequila last year and found it great. As above someone stayed in the palace which is next door. If your looking at the riu stay in tequila which is cheaper but you can use the other facilities and will do for the beach.(can't use the palace though)

You start moving away then, then xcaret is nice and $12 to town. The grand sirenis is also nice but not as much character and is $25 into town and a good distance.

If you need any info give me a shout, going again this year beer
