And for some more suggestions.....
Portavadie Marina, just round from Tighnabruaich. I'm visiting there this weekend. Have been going for the past 4 or 5 years. Really nice, although i don't know if the pool has been built yet

I've also heard good things about Drimsynie hotel/lodges

I've not read any of the trip advisor stuff from Moness. Gonna check now ha.
The inlaws had a time share there so i've been a few times and it's always been very good. The accomodation is basic but nice enough, the surroundings are lovely, and your only a five minute walk from the Birks of Aberfeldy.
The resort has a decent sized pool, with Spa/Sauna and Steam room, and there's a private dining area, although i've never used it.
It's a great base for exploring around Perthshire which for us was the main thing and your only a 10 minute drive away from Loch Tay and all the touristy stuff there.
The only gripe i've ever had there was that i ordered a beef burger from the bar, and they gave me a ham burger. 1st world problems and all that.
Another place which i would recommend is the self catering lodges at Duchally near Auchterarder. The lodges there are fantastic, easily a level up from from the ones at Moness, however i prefer the location of Moness.
Edited to add, with both you can stay in the "Hotel" as apposed to the lodges.

I live in the Lakes OP-the west fringe away from the main tourist areas.
We've family in Glasgow too and regularly make the 2.5 hour trip. Windermere/Bowness area isn't my favorite area of the Lakes but depends what you want. Ambleside is nice but out of the bigger towns inside the national park I prefer Keswick. Grasmere is very nice if you want something smaller but still has pubs/restaurants etc, Glennridding, Pooley Bridge on Ulswater lower key still. There's plenty of small villages dotted about, Buttermere is nice but not a lot going on in the evenings.
The Mrs is from Oban, it would take you a similar amount of time to get up there from Glasgow. Really like it up there too.

I'd recommend Middle Ruddings, just outside Keswick: http://www.middle-ruddings.co.uk/home/4579239659
Their £65 per person per night including breakfast and dinner is astonishing value - the food is fantastic! Also have fantastic beers on tap.
The hotel isn't the most modern but it's very clean and comfortable. It's very traditional. Great views across to Skiddaw.

Thanks, will check it out. Can anyone comment on St. Alban's? Someone in my wife's work suggested it today?

Hotel in the Cotswolds area then?
Thanks for the suggestion - I'll have a look at what the area has in terms of tourist attraction. I wouldn't say we're big 'cultural' attraction lovers but we would visit a museum and check out any places of interest. I would love to find somewhere with lots of interesting places to visit that isn't too rowdy/tacky but at the same time, not somewhere that only really offers outdoor type activities.Martin_M said:
Really want to stick to a hotel on this occasion I think.
i know you said hotels, but you could do a lot worse than herehttp://www.llethrydbarns.co.uk/

been there a 3 times, the people that run it (Julie and Adrian) are lovely, my wife and I are known as the land rover people (stayed there once after a week green-laning in Wales).
the rooms are all self contained with breakfast in the main house.
Great places to eat in the area, plus Joe's ice cream (http://www.joes-icecream.com/Find-Your-Nearest.html?postcode=ss7+1el)
Beautiful area (bar swansea that is, didn't like it there) and you could convince your other half to try here www.welsh-whisky.co.uk, get her to drive you get to sample
just an idea.
p.s. nothing to do with us, just love the place and the area.

Is Brighton a place to avoid? (I've heard that it's a classier Blackpool)

Thanks for this but Wales is a bit far for us as we will most likely drive.

Wales is too far then you ask about Brighton? Is Brighton a place to avoid? (I've heard that it's a classier Blackpool)
I could think of better places to go especially from Glasgow!
Brother-in-Law and family live there and have visited a few times.
IMO probably the most pretentious place I've ever been to :-)
But good place for a weekend with great places to eat and drink.
Hotels expensive for what they are.
Beach waste of time for us because we have kids.
Too pebbly and sea not safe really for kids to swim in.
We had to drive an hour to find a sandy beach!
I would try the Lakes. Lots to do, beautiful countryside, great places to eat and drink and it has some fantastic hotels/B&B's.
