Does anybody here have experience of renting from Vancouver airport?

We're going over there for a wedding and I want something slightly interesting rather than the usual rubbish you get at car hire desks. Trouble is nobody seems to have anything out of the ordinary.

Even had a look at Seattle and then driving over the border but no luck there either.

I half expected international airports to be littered with 'Stangs

We go over once or twice a year, for the last ten years. From memory the big hire companies have warm-ish convertibles in summer. Worth spending time on the relevant websites to check. Note they will never guarantee you a specific model, only a "class" of car.

When are you going?

I spoke to Hertz recently in that part of the world - they don't know what they're going to have until 5-6 months before the rental date due to fleet changes etc. You can hire a basic car, but if you want something interesting, wait until 5-6 months before.

We are going in May. I've checked Hertz Adrenaline collection and Avis Prestige etc but they don't have anything remotely interesting in Vancouver.

I think my best bet will likely be a small independent near the airport perhaps?

I don't mind if it's not a V8, any Stang or Camaro will do. I just can't bear the thought of driving a bog standard Chevvy stbox or something

I just spent 3 weeks in a car rented from Hertz at Vancouver airport. We'd paid for the nastiest little hatchback, and when we showed up we were told there were no cars at all and had to wait over 2 hours. Eventually we were put in a Golf which counted as an upgrade and turned out to be quite nice, so I suppose we were lucky in a way.

(The boggo Golf TSI in North America is a 1.8 turbo and it's actually not slow.)

There were a number of Dodge Chargers in the rental area, so that might be an option, not sure which company was doing them. Whatever you get it will be an auto, so a 'pure driving experience' ain't gonna happen.

Wait until December/January to book.

I'm off there in June and am waiting for the new year to rent something exciting.

I got a Mustang Convertible from Vancouver Airport a few years back. You could specify you wanted a convertible and then you either got a Sebring or a Mustang.

Luckily when they started the paperwork for the Sebring my wife pointed at the silver Mustang and said, "Couldn't you just clean that one up? We really wanted a Mustang...". Sure enough that's what they did.

Fun car. Nowhere near as much grunt as you would expect when compared to the noise it made but it was still great fun and made an expensive holiday that much more special. Fond memories...

Budget do Mustang convertibles from Calgary airport. Maybe fly to there instead and enjoy the drive over the Rockies?

I would not waste your money on a non v8 mustang or camaro.

A muscle car experience is all about the v8.

CONFIRMED: I had a new Stang convertible from Chicago O'Hare a couple of years ago.
T'was the V6.
T'was brand new, 4 miles on the clock.
T'was crap.

Rental companies don't plan that far ahead since most of their fleet changes every 15k miles or so.

Good idea but I've booked our flights now. I think I've found a company in Vancouver who are able to guarantee a Stang or Camaro with airport transfers. That might be the way forward even if it is a bit of hassle.

We had a V6 Mustang convertible for our US roadtrip in June, and whilst it ain't no V8 it's still better than the usual rubbish you'd get at the airport desk.

Try the rental locations downtown (West Georgia Street particularly). All the major hire companies only have anything reasonably interesting in summer months. Bear in mind if you have an accident anywhere reasonably elevated on a car without summer tyres, you'll be liable. Also pay the extra for the insurance, or you will be liable for full cost of damage to the car.

You can get interesting cars from here, a smaller outfit Downtown:

I know Budget do Mustang GTs and Avis have the V6 Charger available. Otherwise, it's V6 convertible camaros and mustangs.
