As many of you know the trek south through France with young kids (in our case 5 yr old twins) can be a real pain.

We were hoping to make things easier by breaking the journey with an overnighter somewhere an hour or so due south of Calais (we're heading for La Rochelle) and thought it would be nice to make it more of an event by finding a nice hotel with a decent restaurant. Ideally we'd like somewhere that has babysitting so the grown ups can have a decent evening meal or maybe somewhere with rooms close enough to the restaurant that an intercom would work.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Have a search around Le Touquet. That's coastal and quite up market in places.

If you're going to La Rochelle, then why Calais.

Portsmouth to St. Malo overnight will get you in at around 8:00am, and it's max 4 hours to La Rochelle from there. Get a cabin on the Ferry and it's a great adventure for the kids.

If you're going via Paris then I'd strongly recommend Survilliers at the first junction north of Paris, it's just up the A1 from Charles De Gaulle airport. it's a complete hotel area with about eight of the major French hotel chains there as well as the chain restaurants. They all undercut each other and you can get some excellent deals. I've stayed there about five times and always got a good deal.

Ibis, Novotel, Balladins, Campanile, Premier, First Classe etc. Google Survilliers and you'll zoom in and see what's there. A few emails will get you sorted. It's a bit more (c21/2 hours) than your hour preference but you'll be perfectly placed for the next day

Of course if you're going the slow route via Rouen, Good luck. Did that a few years ago towing a caravan. We averaged fourteen mile per hour, but it might be better now. Maybe you'd get to fifteen.

I've stayed at LeCoq with my family twice, they have a nice family room with a double bed and two singles nice bathroom and seperate toilet its nice as its in the courtyard about 15 strides away from the hotel. There is some parking in the courtyard and also outside the front of the hotel too.

Nice town as well.

Great food in the resturant where my then 9 year old found he loves lobster orders it everywhere we go now!

Also stayed at Le Touquet which is a nice town but I would struggle to recommend or remember the hotel we stayed at last time.

Sailed through last year. The bit through Rouen isn't picturesque but was okay time wise.
