Blueg33 is on the right lines but danzitu has the right location, the statue is at Pozo Izquierdo on Gran Canaria. It's actually of one of the identical twins, Daida and Iballa Moreno who are from there and have been the top women wavesailors for a long time. Bjorn Dunkerbeck was the top male sailor in every windsurfing discipline for many years and came from near there. if you look closely there are three sail numbers on the top, E11-Bjorn's, E63 & E64 - Daida's and Iballa's.
I was in Gran Canaria on holiday and went there a few weeks ago but didn't bother to try and sail as it's windy port tack and onshore waves with a rocky beach and I'm too old for all that. I still sail flat water freeriding occasionally but I'm more into golf these days. My son competed at Pozo several times in the early 2000's when he was starting out on the world tour before he died in 2004, I don't have any photo's of him there but here's a couple of him in some big waves in Maui.
Good pics, sorry to hear that your son passed away.I was in Gran Canaria on holiday and went there a few weeks ago but didn't bother to try and sail as it's windy port tack and onshore waves with a rocky beach and I'm too old for all that. I missed the sail numbers on the statue, there is a similar one of Dunkerbeck somewhere.
Looks like your son was pretty good if he was embarking on the World Tour. I was semi pro (kit and travelling expenses but no salary) in the late 1980's sponsored by Sailboard, never got to Maui but did the West Coast of Aus. I also competed in various speed trials. I was just beaten by Simon Stonehouse for the then production board speed record. Overall I was almost but not quite good enough. I don't sale very often any more, I live too far from the sea Still have a load of dated kit, some great Tushingham race sails and a couple of boards including the almost production record holder Tiga Slalom
