I was thinking about heading out the end of year and was looking some of this adventure companies but wasn't overly comfortable with the standard accommodation & would rather not be tied into group travel.

I have travelled a fair bit and arranged my own 'tours' I was just a bit nervous about doing it in the subcontinent.

Does anyone have any experience/advice.

Thanks in advance.

We have been to Nepal several times. What exactly do you want to do? Why do you want to go to Delhi? It is quite easy to arrange independent travel - either from the UK or once you are there.

Was going to fly in to Delhi and thought it would be good to do the whole 'Golden Triangle' thing before heading up to Nepal.

How busy/hot is it there over New Year? Is that a wise time travel?

Any other things you'd recommend in Nepal?

Thanks in advance

Combining the two is quite a big trip - so you will need a few weeks to fit all this in. The India part of the trip is quite easy to organise but travel between the sites can be very tedious. There are trains - quite an experience - travel "first class" and you will at least get a seat. Travel by road is exciting (in the perilous sense of the word) and slow - we never managed to average more than 40kph - so even short distances take a long time. Large variety of accommodation available and there are lots of tour operators who will organise it all for you. We loved the food (vegetarian). The atmosphere (air) is awful - Delhi now ranks as being one of the most polluted cities in the world. Travel at New Year (presume you mean UK NY) will be OK - we were there at Diwali (November) and that was great but a lot of shops close for a few days. Temperatures will be chilly - and especially in Nepal - average 20C in Delhi, 9C Kathmandu in January.
Nepal is a fabulous country but Kathmandu (IMHO) is a polluted dump and apart from being a travel hub is best avoided. There are some temples and sites of historic interest to visit but the real reason to go there is to trek. The mountains are amazing, the people friendly and welcoming, the food is Dahl Batt (everywhere) and the accommodation is "rustic". There are lots of trekking routes depending on your interest and experience and these can be organised locally from Kathmandu or (probably better - but more expensive) to organise through a tour operator from the UK. I think there is a big promotion for Nepal at the moment as the tourist industry was severely affected by the earthquake and the aftermath of the Everest avalanche which closed all climbing for a season. January (in fact winter) is not generally a good time for mountain walking because of the snow - better times are late Autumn or Spring. Summer has the monsoon rains (and leeches) but lots of exotic plants!
I can't give you an estimate of the cost - but most of this would be travel - and the quality of your accommodation will depend on your budget. Buying things locally is pretty cheap (like food, clothing etc)). You will need the right gear and decent travel insurance (particularly if you are trekking). Good luck - I hope that helps
