Christmas Markets In Europe!
Discussion
I lived in Alsace last year, and so would also recommend the Colmar one. There are several others within an hour or so drive including Strasbourg but also across the border in Freiburg and Baden Baden. I had a great day last year where I went to the Christmas market in Baden Baden then drove through black forest, stopping off by Mummelsee lake as I drove back to my accommodation in Mulhouse (which I would not recommend!)
My GF has to work a fair bit in Dresden and all of her collegues say it it the nicest Christmas market in Germany. I'm off there this year and the family are coming too. You are also in very easy reach of Prague and Berlin too if you want to explore the area.
There are also alot of old castles in the immediate area if that is your thing.

Cross your fingers for cold weather. Wrap up warm and drink Feuerzangenbowle instead of Glühwein because it tastes better. Be careful though, as it goes straight to your head!
For the last 2 years the temperature in Frankfurt did not get below 10 degrees in December so drinking something warm was no fun.

Yeah, i loved Cologne Christmas market. I'll do it again one day.
I’ve not been to the Christmas market in Cologne, but the city itself is fantastic, so well worth a visit imo. Couldn't fit in a summer holiday this year so it's Xmas markets a go-go for me and Mrs DS this year. Always fancied Aachen, will do a day in Bruges on departure day, but our main destination this time is Monschau which I visited on a hot day in summer and looks like something out of a postcard. Google it.
Two years ago I drove to Cologne (just FOUR Hours from Calais), stayed just outside the town itself within a short tram
ridle from the city centre. It's typically German with kits of meat and drinking! It did, however, rain so that slightly spoiled events. Drove to the Brussels market on the way back which is more of a fairy tale type market but equally as charming in its own way. Cold, dry weather does make things much more romantic and enjoyable.

Monschau is lovely, but be warned, the Christmas Market is VERY popular, and I mean having to park three miles away in a field and get the Park & Ride bus in popular. Also, the area is very narrow and very crammed where the Christmas Market is, it's a bit like wandering through the streets on Venice during the summer holidays. paulwirral said:
