Munich before xmas, top tips?
Discussion
Hopefully in Munich the week before xmas for 3 nights (2 full days). Recommendations for things to do and places to eat (at a reasonable cost!)?
Have seen a few threads on the place but some up to date info would be welcome, Christmas markets sound fun way to while away a couple of hours.
Will be staying in the Harras area if that helps...

BMW World (free) and Museum are both fantastic, and were the highlight of my Munich trip (as sad as that may sound). It's an absolute must!

Definitely BMW World and the museum and if you can get on a factory tour that is brilliant. Munich city centre itself is a great place to just wander around. Oh and if history is your thing then a trip to Dachau. It really is eerie but you do get a real sense of how terrible a place it was.
The Deutsches Museum is very good http://www.deutsches-museum.de/index.php?id=1&...

Starnbergersee and the Andechs Monastery
I did the BMW factory tour in 1995 and found it very interesting, a trip last year to the Mini plant was eye opening to see how much is automated now!
The Hofbrauhaus is worth a visit if you've not been before. YES, it's very touristy, but it's great fun and you'll make friends (if only for the evening) with people from all over the world!
A wander around the Englischergarten is great any time of year, a beer and Brezen in the Chimeseturm beergarden is great way to rest your legs part way 'round.
There used to be some great restaurants in the Schwabing area, just off the north end of the Englischergarten.
Best Indian used to be the Rama in Ismaning (a few stops from the airport on the S-Bahn), although I'll admit it's been a few years since I was last there!

I stayed at the K+K in Harras, nice enough location, very handy for the U-bahn. Don't do what I did and forget to timestamp your 3 day subway pass otherwise a very angry ticket inspector will shout at you for a very long time. From Harras, Marienplatz is a few stops away and handy for the christmas market. Mostly pedestrianised and loads to see within 5 mins walk, Frauenkirche is ok but there are quite a few other old buildings you can go see fee of charge.
+1 on BMW world, if the weather is nice the olympic park nearby is worth a wander around. Hofbräuhaus is good, mind you I was quite steaming when I was there, might be a different story if you're not a big beer drinker.

Definitely this. I would also recommend renting a M car from BMW on Demand (link here) and going out to play on the Autobahn for a few hours (the A92 is particularly good IMO and is easy to get to from BMW Welt). Dachau is also recommended - especially if the weather is cold and there is snow on the ground - it seems to add to the sense of how awful a place it must have been.
The Olympic Tower is also worth a visit if the weather is clear as there are fantastic views down to the Alps.

I went once and I wouldn't suggest it's 'recommended', but if you're up to it, it's a salutary reminder of what politician's hatred can make people do to other people...
With some of the aholes in power around the world (or soon to be), perhaps everyone should be forced to visit Dachau or Auschwitz...
