The flights to Sal are awful, Birmingham Manchester or Gatwick all fly out at around 7pm getting you back early hours of the next morning.

Not much fun with an 18 month old
Its a draw back with this type of destination,Sal airport is small and hectic.Mind you look at it this way? You have two choices from Gatwick,09.35 or 14.20 so you arrive at a reasonable time of day. Leaving Sal at 19.25 does get you home at stupid o'clock but at least you have the whole day to prepare.
Also Thomson are now using a Dreamliner.

Must have changed recently. They were great before Christmas, fly out from Birmingham at around 7am, so got there just in time for check in. The checkout was at 10:30am, so time for breakfast and packing.

We went Santa Maria, Sal. Stayed at Oasis Salinas, bed and breakfast. Short walk to the town. Lots of places to each and drink so would definitely recommend NOT going all inclusive!

Just looking at at going here in March.

I am looking for a couples "do nothing week" and was considering the Maldives and the Caribbean but I don't really want to spend 4k on a week doing nothing.

Cape Verde is under 2k, 5 star all inclusive here in this new hotel with day flights from gatwick and everything else all in.

https://www.firstchoice.co.uk/holiday/accommodatio...

As we wont be adventuring anywhere it looks like a good deal or would I be disappointed and regret spending double to go to Antigua or Maldives?

Have a look back on this thread, Riu Palace has been described as a 5* prison camp. Its in the middle of no where, there is absolute nothing for miles and miles, like being on the moon, and a long bumpy ride from the airport. Mind you if your content to just chill by the pool everyday, eat in the same restaurant every night, drink with the same people in the same bar every night, I suppose you wont mind.

Sal island is much better, its still a barren landscape, but at least you will see a bit of life. Check out all the comments about Santa Maria on this thread, There are a couple of new all inclusive hotels just down the beach. or rent an apartment and do your own thing.

I went 10 years ago and stayed outside the main hotels on a b7B basis. I got by but there are not many bars or restuarants outside of the all inclusive hotels.

There is nothing to really do on Sal apart from a dune buggy tour of the island, which is basically just sand and dust.

If you want to lie by the pool and hardly move it is ok but if you want to get out and about forget it.

It’s the Riu Tourareg that’s in the middle of nowhere.

The hotels at the north of the island are near the town and there are more beach bars than there used to be.
Would I go back? - only if the couple running giggling gecko tours were still doing stuff vaguely interesting.

This was our experience too. If you plan to sit by the pool all day then fine, but if you want things to do there isn't much. We went for 2 weeks and did everything possible but still had days where we did nothing.

I Went about 4 years ago, yes there’s not a great deal to do there but I enjoyed my week of laying in the sun.

The Rui toureg I went to was great, a main buffet restaurant which served different things each day and then 3 other restaurants Italian afracan and ala carte, all very nice food, and a beach bar style thing in the day serving pizza and local African dishes

Great beach to relax on, quite windy but still hot. The place was clean and well run. Drinks where a the usual local spirits but as were adults only we got premium spirits

The hotel had loads to do, nightclub, games etc a bit like a holiday camp.

It was much better than Cuba. Which I hated.

I plan to go back next January. Most likely to the the tui sensiamr whuch has been split from another hotel I believe

When we went we stayed in the Melia Llana, the one next to the sensimar you mention. Was pretty nice.

My wife and I have booked to go to Boa Vista for 7 days, last week of March. Booked Whale-watching boat trips, quad-bikes and e-bikes (fatbikes for the beach). I love Africa generally so going for the most desolate, desert island 'authentic' experience possible in terms of low tourist numbers but the whales are the main event for us. So hopefully they put in an appearance! biggrin

Living in the Algarve means I'm not going for swimming or warm weather, just want a different type of experience. Only a 4 hour flight from Lisbon so will spend a night there on the way, take in some city culture en-route.

If you get stuck for anything to do, the couple that run this company are great.

Definitely think again and look at Santa Maria in Sal. We went for a week of doing nothing and it was great, I'd go again if we were looking for a winter break in the sun for a good price.

Lots of place to eat and drink.

For a week there's enough activities to do a few things, I assume you'll want to spend time on the beach and by the pool.

we stayed here and it did the job perfectly - https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g482848... All inclusive there looked pretty tragic though eating in the same restaurant every night.

We looked at cape V as an alternative to Egypt which we use each time we get bored of the weather as its so quick and cheap. Couldn’t see it was a better bet - am I right?

For lying in the sun, sorkling, 5* all inc........I’m assuming Red Sea wins?

Yes for snorkelling as Cape Verde is the Atlantic I think and was very choppy when we went. Lots of red flags.

Aren’t you pretty much guaranteed food poisoning in edgypt too?

Cape Verde is about 30 degrees with a good breeze so it’s my bet. Never fancied Egypt
