My wife and I went pre child in September 2011 to what was the Riu Funana on Sal. Really enjoyed it. It is very much a lie in the sun thing though.

We did go for walks and ventured into the local town a few times.

Be wary of the sun though. It's quite high and people don't realise how strong it is. When we landed there, a young woman was being flown back to the UK with terrible burns.

Bit of a resurrection, I 've just book the Riu Palace for next March and keep seeing posts saying how strong the sun is. Used factor twelve oil in Mexicao and was fine. Do you reallt need Factor 50 like everyone is telling me?

We went for 11 days and took 3 spray cans of factor 50 between 2 people, we ran out on day 7 and still came back super dark. Take more than you need as suncream is EXPENSIVE! You're talking £30-50 a bottle.

Thank you, I've seen the prices out there yikes hence asking. Factor 50 and still tanned? That's impressive, Guess I'll have to be a bit more careful than usual.

Yeah, I'd definitely throw a few bottles in each case you take. In our case we were in and out of pools and the sea so it washes off easy and you get through it.

My thighs probably hadn't seen sun for 6 months and this was my legs on Day 7 of 11. Paying £50 for some sunscreen is not fun, we had to buy one there and I wouldn't recommend it.

Holy thread ressurection Batman!?

Looking going to Sal mid august for a week. Just want somewhere for the wife and I to chill. We do like being on the beach rather than pool and snorkelling, and we keep hearing that the wing is strong. We have also heard though that August is the best month for this. Any thoughts?

Currently thinking of the Riu Cabo Verde, Riu Funana or something for a similar budget.

Any assistance or guidance mainly with regards to just how strong the wind is would be fantastic.

If you can find a hotel with a man made enclosed beach you’ll be fine. The wind was pretty bad on the public beaches so the sea was very harsh but as our hotel had an enclosure beach area the waves were much less.

Went to the funana last year in feb - very nice. Riu Cabo Verde is essentially the sister hotel next door which is adults only. Both hotels share the main stage entertainment, but otherwise separate.

there’s a relatively simple beach bar and drinks are free on your wristband.

Did you book it Sheetmaself? Interested to know if anyone's managed to get a discount at all. I achieved the princely of £20 each for next April. Still cheap as chips for 2 weeks but I normally do a bit better with the discount codes

Sorry for the lack of response.

No we didn’t, we want a holiday where we can go to the beach, swim in the sea and snorkel. It just seems that this isn’t the place for that.

Yes, snorkeling is a problem with the crazy waves. I would have suggested one of the better hotel on Shark's Bay, Egypt a few years ago but not sure I'd fancy it nowadays
