We've been to the Split region in the middle of the country several times on land based self catering and yacht charter holidays.
It's really lovely and a refreshing change from France and Spain. Weather will be bloody hot in Aug, beaches are mostly pebble and stone and the sea is as clear as vodka. Good food in restaurants but self catering shopping a bit hit and miss. Used to be very cheap but prices are shooting up now. If you're in the Split area then Split town, the Kaka park, Trogir and boat trips to the offshore islands are all worth doing
Exchange rates vary a lot - research and check you're getting a good deal.
Lots of Russians around who can be a noisy PITA but the Croatian people are really pleasant and friendly.
Worth hiring a car and exploring. Driving standards are err... interesting.

Cheers, looks lovely
It really is. I've been fortunate to travel round much of Euroland and Croatia is probably my favorite ATM for a summer holiday. Off to Montenegro in a few weeks and have heard that's still like Croatia was when we started going about 15 years ago. The Croatian islands especially are stuck in a bit of a timewarp with loads of Communist era cars like Zastavias and Yugos still knocking about and people happy to sit by the roadside or in a tiny village market all day selling garden produce.Very chilled and laid back vibe, interesting Roman and medieval architecture - Trogir is a amazing UNESCO heritage town with a lovely cafe culture - and a couple of absolutely beautiful national parks. The coast is stunning - if you get the chance of a boat trip or ferry ride to one of the islands, especially the Pakleni ones near Havr, some sailing offshore or just a water taxi along the coast then go for it.
Just take care you're not knobbed on the exchange rate, it varies dramatically.
I've stayed in Rovinj twice with day trips to Slovenia and Venice. I have done island hopping out of trogir on a yacht and I'm off again in a month to do more sailing out of trogir, possibly going north to the waterfalls pictured above but undecided yet.
Highly recommend Croatia as discussed prices have shot up since when I first visited but it really is a lovely place to visit, I wasn't a big fan of the crowds in split but the actual city is impressive.
