I want to do the famous Half Dome hike but my partner wouldn't be able to cope. We've chosen one from their website rated as 'moderate' and 2-5 hours instead. Should still be awesome though.

What car are you hiring too? That could make a bit of difference too. In winter I'd go for a nice big comfy truck.
Yeah, probably a Tahoe or an Escalade, with shades and a Violin case. biggrin

So it has. What a shame it's a stunning drive.

What a shame. I drove Highway 1 last year from SF, past Big Sue and Carmel (lovely) etc. Twas excellent. Open top car a must.

Personally, I'd skip Santa Maria to Santa Barbara & find a route straight to Bakersfield.

That stretch of the road is dull, with no redeeming features, no sights worth detouring for, from memory - that was the only dull bit of doing LA to SF on PHC.
