The Amalfi coast / Capri
Discussion
Recommend staying in Sorrento. You an get a ferry to Capri and Amalfi and also bus to Amalfi (but wouldn't`t recommend it) Train to Pompeii/Hurculaneum/Vesuvius. I stayed at the Grand Hotel. Very nice, good breakfast and bar. Rooms good and the staff excellent. Only went two years ago and thinking of going back. Would stay clear of Naples. We stayed 3 nights which was not really enough. 1 day to Amalfi/Positano and another to Capri and one for the ruins so to speak. If you go can recommend a really good restaurant La Favourita O`Parrucchianno about half way down Corso Italia.
Enjoy

If your going out to Capri from Sorrento I would recommend taking a boat with these guys. It's a bit more than the ferry per person but well worth it.

If you do opt to be based in Sorrento I can recommend the Hotel Tramontano. It’s a short walk from the main square, overlooking the sea. Get a sea view room on the top floor for superb view of the Bay of Naples.
As said, Sorrento is good for visiting Pompeii because of the direct suburban train link, maybe 30 minutes ride.
Also worth visiting is the island of Ischia. An organised day trip will get you over to the island, a tour of the island, a visit to the Walton Gardens, and lunch.
IMHO Sorrento is not a good base for the Amalfi Coast. First, it’s not really on that coast and second up to three cruise ships arrive each day and disgorge their passengers so the town is swamped and the prices increase.
Amalfi is in the centre of the coast. It’s a major transport hub and you can get buses and boats everywhere: Naples, Capri, Sorrento, Positano, Maiori, Salerno, Ravello etc. It is a busy town with lots of tourists interchanging on their way elsewhere.
Wife and I have been to the Amalfi Coast three time in the past ten years, always stayed in Ravello. Excellent fun bus ride down to Amalfi and back. Lovely main square and duomo, good choice of restaurants, some gardens to visit, magnificent views of the Amalfi Coast. The problem with Ravello is the number of day trippers, so we always either opt to lounge about the town for the day or have got the bus down to Amalfi and then taken a bus or boat elsewhere for the day so we’ve been around the area quite a bit. Back to Ravello for the evening and it’s just a marvellous place to eat and drink the evening away!
If you like ancient things you can get a day trip to Paestum which is Greek ruins and supposedly larger than Pompeii. On an organised tour you get entry, a guide and lunch. Costs about €75 pp, reasonable value.

This place is charming. http://www.aurora-hotel.it/gallery/
Not expensive or flash and it has no pool as far as I recall. But it's well run and, as I said, charming.
I went to a friends wedding in Sorrento. Have too say I hated the place, even though everyone else says how fabulous it is.
Filthy dirty place, full of camorra, that needed epic renovations and a decent bin collection service, crap bland food and worse wine.
The limoncello wasn't too shabby though.

Positano is a good base, bit small for the number of days you plan to be there, maybe. It's a very busy little town and a great place to get a boat to for lunch.
You can get ferries to everywhere including Capri and, I'm pretty sure, Naples direct too.

We will have a trip to Vesuvius and a trip to Pompeii and the transfer to Capri on the final day, so that won't leave much time to look around Positano or visit other nearby towns. You can get ferries to everywhere including Capri and, I'm pretty sure, Naples direct too.

The best restaurants in Sorrento are down by the small harbour. You can get seafood at half the price and twice the quality as the tourist traps in town.
I recommend Ristorante Bagni Delfino
Via Marina Grande, 216, Sorrento NA, Italy
We did a day trip to Capri. The crowds were horrendous. Think opening day of January sales.

We stayed here on honeymoon in Positano and loved it http://www.covodeisaraceni.it/
