I went for the first time early last year. Whilst I'd dabbled over here, I was never seriously into it, I'd usually have a couple of joints once every few months with friends who were into it and left it at that.

I thought I'd had some strong stuff in the UK, but it was nothing compared to what was available over there. I went in at around mid table and after a joint I was in a very good place. Any more and I'd have been well and truly fked. Wait until it wears off, rinse and repeat as much as you want.

If you aren't used to it (in fact, even if you are) I wouldn't under any circumstances drink beforehand, otherwise things are going to go badly. I spent a few days experimenting with different strains, preferring uppers to the downers.

Laughing fits can be uncontrollable and are immense. All it takes is one person in your group to set off and everyone is falling around laughing. It's a great feeling.

Don't eat space cakes. As practically everyone has said, smoking it allows you to meter the amount you take in, whereas when you eat it, once your body starts to digest it, there's nothing you can do other than ride it out, and it doesn't sound pleasant to me.

Try vaping if you don't like the idea of smoking (although it's illegal to smoke it with tobacco indoors if that's your main concern - most places will have little bowls of herbal stuff to mix with the weed). I went to a place called Happy Feelings, and we had a good chat with the vendor for recommendations. After leaving there we wandered around Amsterdam for about three hours, and it was honestly one of the best experiences of my life.

It's a wonderful and unique place, and whether you get high or not, you'll enjoy it.

The Red Light Bar (Oudezijds Achterburgwal 61, 1012 DB Amsterdam) has a smoking area still out the back with a few pool tables and you can take a beer through from the main bar. Be warned though, the clouds of smoke in there are enough to get high without sparking up your own.

I wish I had read this advice prior to my first trip.

Had a strong brownie in a cafe and after 30 mins nothing had happened so ordered another. 30 mins later and still not much so thought i'd been conned and rented a bicycle to go for a cycle.

Spent the next hour on the same roundabout trying to get off it, with my feet the size of clowns feet and the ground about 20 ft below the pedals. Got the tyre stuck in a tram rail at which point MI6 appeared in a helicopter and chased me in to a kebab shop at 3pm. I sat in the back corner of the kebab shop before crawling out on my hands and knees between the counter and people ordering and tried to run back to my hostel - which was fine until my arms fell off.

Had a sleep in the hostel and then went out to watch the football, sat in the pub and Aguero scores the 94th min winner to win the premier league on the last game of the season and the place erupts. I turn to my mate and ask him if the game has started yet.
That sounds like a bit more than just a hash cake or three....
Someone gave that guy cake with LSD in it.

That is 100% not what happens on weed - but is more likely to happen to a complete lightweight on LSD

or the guy just made it up ..

I'm going with the latter.
To be honest, I don't care, it's a great story! biggrin

As an ex-heavy stoner through a good chunk of my 20's i have to echo a lot of the points of users on here.

Yes, it leads down a slippery slope, but come on, it's a different environment and set out from your day to day life, so when you return home, unless it was some kind of eureka moment in your life, will just file with the rest of the holiday memories.

As for how much and how long, for a first timer as little as you possible can. I used to smoke near enough 1/8ths and quarts over a couple of days in my more stupid addicted days and that would get me up to functioning. Now if i have a couple of drags, it's unable to function panic mode, but thats more about my fear of going down that road again. It's a very situational drug, based very much on your emotional state at the time, honestly. All the cliche st about "Bad vibes" ring so true when you're stoned as a noobie.

Go and enjoy it if you've had the idea, have as little as you possibly can, avoid feeling the big man and going back in until atleast 1 hour post. You wont get addicted unless you've had problems with giving up other mildly addictive things like coffee and soft drinks for example, otherwise you'll enjoy yourself and it will go down in memory as a fun holiday experience.

Also a lot of good advice for getting away from big groups of people and busy places, if you're in your room with some good tv on and lots of snacks and drinks and a full belly you'll have a decent time, end up thinking the world can exist under some form of communism and why haven't we put down the guns and explored the universe.

Usually we butt heads continually, but this is one of the few posts in the thread which is actually accurate and non-sensationalist.

I haven't done the Amsterdam thing, but been in plenty of places where it is decriminalised. Pace yourself. And don't let ego get in the way. The advice about a smaller scene is very good - I had some great hash in Barcelona in a youth hostel with about 4 or 5 others and it was a chilled, relaxed and fun experience. If I was in a more public, full on environment different story.

JFDI, cake is safest bet. Unless your a smoker, then a spliff.

Start with half and see how you go, some people don't need a lot. As some have said, it may take a while for cake.

I personally hate the loss of control and don't touch the stuff any longer. I have had the experiences of hopelessness and the whitey [which is just awful, especially in a public toilet]

It's one off the bucket list and tbh when your back I doubt if you continue.

Something that hasn't been mentioned is that if you are a non-smoker, just the nicotine and other crap in the tobacco can be enough to make someone feel sick and nauseous. Best to smoke it in a bong with icy water to cool the smoke a bit.

To echo the above, you don't really know what you are getting when eating it, and if it feels too much it is already too late. At least when smoking it the effects wear off fairly quickly.

It's not actually legal to smoke tobacco in a joint in a CS - the tobacco smoking ban applies there as it does here. A few places flaunt it but by and large it's not particularly welcome. But you're right about the sick and nauseous bit.

A few late night bars flaunt the regulations but by and large it's not particularly welcome. But you're right about the sick and nauseous bit. People who don't regularly smoke cigarettes will not be able to distinguish between the results of the two substances and will likely be put off cannabis by the unpleasant effects of nicotine which can be amplified by the cannabinoids.
