Two week euro road trip ideas please...
Discussion
Hi Guys, thinking of doing a solo euro road trip next May/June. Never done it solo before but done quite a few US and euro biggies with friends in tow. This time however I just fancy hitting the road and not having to consider anyone else along the way and probably taking it at a slightly slower pace...
As a VERY simplified starting idea, I was thinking of cutting through Germany towards Austria, hitting Slovenia before heading to the Lakes of Northern Italy and then working my way back up to Calais.
Austria, Slovenia and the Lakes have been on my 'to revisit' list for a few years now.
Id probably look at booking two nights at each main location and use that as a base to look around for a couple of days. I was thinking of taking two weeks but could potentially take a little longer.
Transport would likely be an E46 330i convertible.
Any ideas of what to see or specific routes to take within each country would be greatly appreciated. I love good driving roads, scenery and food!
Thanks.

I drove down to Italy in September last year, and one of the memories that's stuck with me (other than the mountain passes) is the Black Forest in Germany. Gorgeous scenery, lovely roads - I stayed a few miles outside of Freudenstadt which was a lovely little town. But maybe too far west for your planned route down.

Might as well nip into Croatia as you're almost there.
Id be open to that but previous experiences of Croatia have left me a little cold to the place tbh.We included Zagreb and Pula, as I hadn't been in Croatia since independence - really liked both, although Zagreb was far less touristy, and a fair bit cheaper as a resuit. Zagreb is very similar to how Prague was about 10yrs ago, minus the stag and hen do's, and not overly Westernised. Pula has some great Roman remains, and old forts to look at
Looking at the map, I'd also consider Bologna as a base (not far from Lamborghini and Ferrari) - great place, and a bit underrated compared to other places in Italy and good food/atmosphere.
It also depends what you want to see - scenery, history, petrolhead, of food and drink to influence the final route.

Did a slightly bigger loop over three weeks last year - Cologne>Nuremberg>Prague>Vienna>Zagreb (though Hungary)>Pula>Venice>Bologna>Davos>Zurich>Brussels.

Sounds good. Tbh - Zagreb sounds good, maybe I should give Croatia a second go. Bologna - great idea and I may even travel further south now in Germany to do the Merc and Porsche museums. The Porsche Museum is worth a visit, and is realistically a half-day visit, which can be combined with a factory tour - check availability as the factory shuts down around the end of August. We didn't visit the Merc museum, as we had last a last-minute offer of a tour at their Singelfinden plant, as we had been on a waiting list. Amazing place and well worth a visit.
For Zagreb, I can't recommend the Esplanade Hotel highly enough. Built for when the Orient Express stopped there, it's a proper old school hotel, with great service and a superb restaurant for a fraction of what you might pay if it was in another major European city.

Again, many thanks, great info and all sounds like just my cup of tea! We didn't visit the Merc museum, as we had last a last-minute offer of a tour at their Singelfinden plant, as we had been on a waiting list. Amazing place and well worth a visit.
