I'd rather spend 2 days at Mount Cook than Franz Josef - it's way more spectacular, providing it's not cloudy all the time of course. The road leading up to it is truly one of the wonders of the world and not to be missed IMO.

Google Image it and see!

tbh I'd probably skip the whole kaikoura/hanmer bit and do cook instead too.

chc -> greymouth via arthurs pass
then franz/fox
then haast pass to wanaka
wanaka to qt
milford 1 night trip
back to qt
then lewis pas to cook
cook - tekapo
tekapo chc

Is the coast road to KK fixed now? I saw a while back there's been landslides after a quake was it?

I really enjoyed KK and we did it in a day. Morning swam with a massive pod of dolphins and in the afternoon went whale watching. Both were excellent and well worth doing.
