So the apartment is on Calle Mar Mediterraneo which is between the golf course and the country club. They bought a townhouse over the otherside of town towards the Hotel area. They are in walking distance of Spanglish which is there local. When I was walking there last year there was loads of new villas going in around that area by Euromarina.
Small world - I am a few roads over from the apartment towards the entrance to el recorral. Probably within ear shot! I would pass by en route to the Boxing gym as I tend to go most mornings when in the town (and to Big Shopping more times than I care to remember).

I am also a regular at the Lizarran next to the Spanglish bar. I try to get to the Elche home matches whenever possible and the coach picks me up fnext to the Spanglish bar. On a petrolhead theme that seems to be where the classic cars head after their monthly meeting so you see some nice American classics out the front sometimes.

I now also realise the pricey townhouses you are referring to! Another Scandi aimed development. A furniture shop has just opened also nearby with prices to match (just along from the ferreteria).

Yes I know where you mean. Havent been over towards the golf course area for a while now. Have they built on the row of shops next to the supermarket? Last i heard it was going to be a hotel?

We normally head up to the arches, or stay local and sit in Spanglish. Cant beat 2Euro a pint and watch the football.

I think next time we are over i'd like to try watch a local football game.

I was waiting for you to comment Phil. After all the problems with the Gota Fria last year I was really looking forward to getting out to my folks' place across the road from you.

This is the first year our 5yo is in school so we are now tied to school holidays, I had been tentatively looking at flights from LGW to Corvera and trying to tie it all in with a triangulated return trip via Dublin to visit extended family in Ireland on our return when the whole lock down kicked off. Alas none of that happening now I fear.
Hi Purple, good to hear from you.

Things are a little difficult at the moment. The Murcia region is one of the regions with the lowest number of virus cases and the Mayor of the region is keen not to 'import' the virus meaning only travel within the region is allowed. So the Murcian's can travel to their second homes in La Manga but the Madrid lot (and from other regions) are not allowed to travel in to the Murcia region. It's the same for all regions presently. Obviously this means we're a way from opening Corvera to international traffic. You can find regular updates in English on Murcia Today

I too (like Shnozz) am thinking of driving down. Since it's PH...... I'm picking up a new Range Rover as soon as restrictions allow and it would be a nice way to run it in smile

We'll be visiting as soon as reasonably possible. If you do get out to La Manga then let me know and we can meet up for a beer.

Shnozz - now I know where you are it appears we are under an hour apart....

We definitely need to sort a pint.

We are in a rather odd situation right now as we are due to vacate our UK property sometime in mid-July. At the same time, with this bizarre world at present, Mrs Shnozz has been told she won't be lecturing face to face for the remainder of the year and I can work remotely regardless. We started to look at short term UK housing to tie us over and see what happens but then it dawned on us that with neither of us required here, so long as we kept below 183 days, we could just hot foot to the villa to see the year out. Other than a slightly increased electric bill, the villa costs are static, and to find a short term UK place would be £10k'ish for 6 months to be sat at home working that we could do from further South at nil cost.

Hence part of the reason that I might be driving down, with UK possessions in storage and a boot full of the remainder for the villa. The big question is whether Spain will have its borders open to us in time....

Never had this been a realistic proposition and its still in the hands of others as to whether it comes off. The concern is that the gamble doesn't come off and I fear the timing will be tight. Every day I am watching the news like a hawk...

As I say, we need a pint.

I tend to watch English PL down near the golf course. Spanish games I tend to head to Don Carlos.

Drop me a line if you want to watch local football. If Elche are at home when I am there I get the coach from by the Spanglish bar which gets you to the Estadio Martínez Valero in about 30 mins max. I use a local agent who sorts the coach and football ticket for €20. I was last there on the 1st March frown I can see it being a while before stadiums are re-open sadly. A great day out though and a lot of bars at the ground level of the stadium and beer prices still extremely reasonable unlike going to a match in England and £6 a pint.

The building at the end by the golf course is a constant source of rumour, and the old dears love a bit of Chinese Whispers hehe I hear dthe hotel rumour; cannot see it myself given its size. Not sure Quesada needs more hotels given that most visit to stay with family, plus there are many AirBnb's plus the existing 2 hotels in the town. Last rumour I heard for the building at the end of that parade was that it was going to be a Scandinavian restaurant. To be honest, work seemed very slow on it over the last 6 months. That part of town, the car park adjacent and the golf course, was all a victim of last October's Gota Fria and that might have impacted progression. It does seem to have stalled for sure. I tend to head a few doors down to watch the football, particularly if I am staying at the villa on my own as Mrs S is not so keen on the expat bars in that area. I don't mind them and the Norwegian barmaid working in them doesn't ruffle my feathers in the same way.

I've heard all sorts of rumours (assuming you mean the one on the end by the entrance to the car park). The gossip keeps people busy I feel. I was tagged as being a drug dealer apparently when I first arrived and this was based on the fact that I was <40 and paying a bar tab I pulled out a wad of Euros (which was to be paid into the bank towards my deposit the next day). That was enough to label me El Chapo in those parts.

If progress is anything to go by, it might have morphed into something else by the time its finished. I have to say I would hate to have any business catering to the (UK) expats in that region.

Unfortunately the UK government, compared to other European governments, has made such a mess of our COVID strategy that I expect we will be one of the last EU countries allowed back in to Spain. From speaking to colleagues internationally and outside the EU this week, they are beginning to open their borders to selected countries with low levels of COVID infections with good identification and control processes. The UK is a long way from achieving this ‘safe to travel’ status in my opinion.

In answer to your question, not a clue but I remain optimistic smile

what can I say...….got a place in Moraira on the costa blanca……….its alright, been there since the late 70s when my parents went there...…..its ok, not a lot to write home about, and dead in the winter.

also have a place in Mijas for the winter....as a golf player.....much better pop into Fuengerola for dinner - busy all year, Marbs ….a lot less busy....but still nice.....loads to do all year, and a great place,

I go every month for a week or so, and spent all of Feb there and flew home just before the lockdown.....what can I say every month i'm dining outside...playing golf....and going to the Gym , spa and playing padel at Higeron…..

what a life.....and cannot wait to return , and if I had my way I would stay there - well for the winter.

Are they still places in Spain where you can buy an apartment on a complex with pool for €40k or am I ridiculously out of date?

In essence I’m asking are there areas where you get a lot more for your money but still near the sea and if so where.

Feel free to laugh if I’m unicorn hunting.

Thanks.
I thought I would resurrect this thread as there are clear signs that prices are softening.

https://www.idealista.com/en/ Is similar to Rightmove in the UK.

There is a filter towards the bottom to search for distressed property sales. Also one to see more recent listings. Prices are also being reduced by significant amounts.

Also a reminder that prices in Spain can be more volatile than other parts of Europe.

Cheers Phil - I'll take you up on that, but probably not this year :-(

Things are somewhat logistically tricky this end. I may have mentioned up the thread that I'm a 12-weeker, (long-term ulcerative colitis managed by immunosuppresants, which was all going fine until Covid came along) so only just officially allowed out.

My wife is a Primary school teaching assistant and because of shielding has asked to not go back to work until September, so we have a better view of what the 'R' rate is. Conversely our 5yo son's (different) school a mile away from where she works run by the same Council have canned Reception classes for the rest of the year because they don't think it is safe, so he's not going back until September either. Pretty much being pulled from pillar to post on that score.

It's a real shame, I am an IT contractor and my client co have said no need to go to their office for the forseeable, so in any other circumstances I could have driven my M3 down to La Manga and done an extended working holiday. Wife and son chilling by the pool, me on the balcony with the laptop trying to stay off the San Miguel until at least 3pm! We tend to keep ourselves to ourselves anyway whilst there so social distancing would be pretty easy for the life we lead when there.

As it is my wife is very nervous about us taking any kind of holiday, either at home or abroad. Pah. Circumstances dictate that I am only driving about 4k miles a year these days, so a road trip like that, removing the need to fly. would have been great fun. Sigh.

I have followed Murcia Today in the past but not dipped in for ages, thanks, will take a look. My parents' neighbours in the UK have an apartment in one of the streets leading down towards Mar De Cristal, they only went out for a bit of sun in February and have been stuck there since, unable to get a flight back apparently. First world problems and all that, but crazy times.

Same just spent a while looking at Fuerteventura.
Can find an apartment in a complex with a pool for €80000.

I’m not sure of the region, but just following on from the conversation about this seems like a reds only priced humble place.

https://www.idealista.com/en/inmueble/89684386/

We’re both looking to move to completely remote working opportunities and move out of the rat race a little as we approach 40.

I’d appreciate insights into experiences and thoughts and guess that starts with reading this thread from the beginning. smile

It's certainly been up and down over the last 20 years!

I had an interesting chat with one of my neighbours last week. His place is a similar layout to mine, a bit smaller internally (125sqm vs 132sqm), but is a penthouse, so has better views and a roof terrace - although our outside space is pretty much the same as I have a big terrace (c.130sqm).

He bought new, end of 1999 and paid £176k, equivalent to c.€260k at the 1.5 fx the pound was set at when the Euro launched. In 2007, he had an offer to sell at €550k, but the guy who made the offer ended up buying something else.

I bought mine summer of 2014 for €220k (£160k at the then fx). Pre Covid, it was valued at €300-320k.

I decided on the same as I approached my 40th.

Region wise for that property, it's where is being discussed earlier in this thread where Phil. and a few others have places. Very nice area.

Not sure on your requirements but to live there at all, let alone work there, it's a very small studio. It's quite an old build and where it says it has no heating, I assume that means it has no cooling either. You will need to address that as Spain can be roasting in summer and freezing in winter.

It looks as though the only window/light is to the front of the apartment so very dark. It's cheap, for sure, but to me that looks like very much a lock up and leave place to sleep at night and head to the beach all day, not somewhere to spend any amount of time or to work, but horses for courses.
