I could go on and on
On and on? That's 4 things and it's already getting into vague 'ummm Chinese theatre what now?' territory!

I think the takeaway is that LA is good if you are into films. Otherwise it's just a big st hole with a couple of interesting bits

Not everyone is as ignorant as you , and know full well what these places are , they are just 4 off the top of my head, LA is a massive city , just to dismiss it as a giant movie set is moronic

As always on PH it turns into an argument, but having been to CA ten or twenty times I'd agree with everything the earlier posts said... LA isn't the nicest place to be on holiday. If you want to see an American city, stop off in Boston or NYC which are much nicer. Hearst, Sausalito, Solvang, Monterrey/Carmel, Santa Barbara, Venice Beach, Big Sur, Napa Valley - all places I'd happily spend more time. Ideally you'd take two weeks and come back via Vegas (one night), Death Valley, Mono Lake, Yosemite and Sutter's Mill. Or make it three weeks and add the Grand Canyon, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Lake Powell... so many places to take your breath away. Have fun!

You can't count Santa Monica Pier as it's not actually in LA! biggrin
It is.
It is in Los Angeles county, which kind of backs up my original point. Los Angeles is a collection of distinct and different cities that have merged into one giant sprawl.

Are you suggesting the people in LA are somehow more interesting than those in Portland, Springfield, Rachel or anywhere else in the States?

Of course LA has something for some people.
As I said, a great interest in movies or theme parks make it attractive, but it's lacking in much else, including history, landscape or interesting architecture.

Get out of LA and there are things to see and do, but this part of California isn't even attractive by desert standards...

Anyway, I suspect us naysayers won't discourage those keen to see it, but after numerous visits (usually business with some leisure added on) I've not grown fonder of the place...

M
I've been to Los Angeles probably 10 times over the years.
Never been to a theme park and never been to anywhere to do with movies. Never been to the Hollywood sign either.

Loved it every time.

Then again I didn't generally have early nights so that I could seek out 'history, landscape or interesting architecture' the next day

We chose to do a different road trip over nearly three weeks. Whilst the coast is lovely and the trip is a good one, we went the other way - inland.

We found 2 days in SF was enough - it's been said, book the Alcatraz trip 3 months ahead, it gets full quickly, and go for the evening tour. Biking the Golden Gate bridge is fun too. The rest of the place is lovely, but we found it's just another US city.

After SF we went back to the airport and picked top a hire car - yes, also don't bother with a car in SF - the traffic is bad and the parking is horrendous.

Yosemite was next (if you choose to go then stay in the valley and book as early as you can), then Death Valley and on to Vegas - Grand Canyon etc.

We took a couple of days in San Diego which we found was much better than SF, more character.

The last week was in an apartment in Venice Beach - a good base to explore and a retreat at the same time.

I would suggest that if you're planning a road trip then we had a very good experience with Trailfinders. The flights were with Virgin Atlantic, into SF and put of LA, no more expensive than a return to SF. The logistics of all the hotels was good, a voucher for each and no quibbles or questions. At the time Virgin were also running a special offer on the hire car - no one way fee which saved $150.

Did a similar trip 5 years ago but in the opposite direction. We loved Morro Bay as its very quirky in places and good place to go see sea otters.

One place not mentioned yet is Solvang. Quaint little place modeled on a Danish village! Full of Danish style houses, food and beer. The weekend we were there they also had a large car rally in town which probably helped my enjoyment.

LA very meh

Seem to be running the car show again this year - August 26th. Can recommend. Hundreds of cars, most with noisy V8s

Ok, fans of modern architecture might find a few sites smile

I'll give you that one.

I thought I'd find LA incredible, but i never have.

If you extend out to LA county, there are a few decent spots to visit, not least Long Beach.

None, though, would tempt me back for a holiday.
